Chapter 8 - The Power Outage

The sudden plunge into darkness sent a jolt of pure adrenaline through Hailey’s veins. The harsh fluorescent lights above went dead, leaving only the dim, pulsing blue glow of the table's embedded screen to cast long, eerie shadows across the concrete walls. The man in the dark suit froze, his hand hovering over the leather briefcase as the mechanical hum of the underground ventilation system ground to a sudden halt.

"What's happening?" Hailey gasped, dropping the pen and backing away from the table.

Before the man could answer, a loud, heavy thud echoed from somewhere deep within the subterranean hallway, followed by the distant sound of blaring emergency alarms. Red backup strobe lights flickered to life along the baseboards, casting a bloody hue over the narrow room. The electronic lock on the heavy steel door buzzed loudly, clicked twice, and then swung open a few inches under the pressure of the pressurized air system.

The man in the suit reached inside his jacket, his hand darting toward a concealed shoulder holster. But before he could draw his weapon, a gloved hand shot through the partially open doorway, grabbing him by the throat and slamming him violently against the concrete wall. The man let out a choked gasp as he lost consciousness, sliding down the wall until he lay motionless on the floor.

Stepping into the red-tinted light was a figure clad in tactical black gear, their face obscured by a high-tech tactical helmet with night-vision lenses glowing a faint emerald green.

Hailey pressed her back against the corner, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. "Who are you? Are you here to kill me?"

The figure ignored her, stepping past the unconscious man and walking directly up to the steel table. With a swift, practiced motion, the intruder plugged a portable data-decryptor device into the table's USB port. The screen flashed violently, turning from blue to a blinding, solid white before displaying a string of encrypted command codes scrolling past at dizzying speeds.

"Don't move," a familiar, modulated voice commanded from beneath the tactical helmet.

The voice was altered by the communication rig, but the cadence, the sharp diction, and the cold authority behind it were unmistakable. Hailey’s breath caught in her throat.

"Alex?" she whispered, staring in disbelief at the tactical gear.

The figure paused, lifting a gloved hand to release the side latches of the helmet. The helmet hissed as the air seal broke, and the wearer lifted it off to reveal the dark hair and sharp features of the young Kingston heir. But there was no warmth in Alex's eyes—only a cold, calculated intensity that frightened Hailey far more than his mother's wrath.

"You think my parents control everything in this estate, Hailey?" Alex asked quietly, his eyes locked onto the glowing download progress bar on the screen. "They control the board. They control the assets. But I control the digital grid."

Hailey stared at him, her mind struggling to piece together the shifting alliances within the Kingston dynasty. "You're turning against them?"

Alex turned his head slowly, looking down at her with a terrifying smile. "I'm not turning against them, Hailey. I'm replacing them."
