Chapter 12 - The Unexpected Ally

The figure standing in the doorway was not a Kingston security guard, nor was it one of Alex’s tactical operatives. It was Marcus Vance, the former head of corporate security whom Hailey had bribed months ago. Marcus looked significantly better than he had earlier in the basement; his swollen eye was fading to a dull yellow, and he held a heavy encrypted laptop case firmly in his right hand. He stepped past the unconscious man on the floor without a second glance, his eyes fixed entirely on Alex.

"The firewall on the main server block just resisted our override sequence, boss," Marcus said, his voice clipped and professional. "Your parents had a secondary failsafe wired directly into the federal reserve network. If we don't clear the authorization protocol within the next three minutes, the entire Kingston banking infrastructure will lock down automatically."

Alex frowned, his cool composure finally cracking just a fraction as he turned to look at Marcus. "I checked the network architecture twice. There shouldn't be any federal reserve failsafe active."

"There is now," Marcus replied, setting the encrypted laptop case onto the steel table right beside the biometric scanner. He popped the latches with a sharp click, revealing a dual-screen interface displaying lines of rapidly scrolling red code. "Your father anticipated a coup years ago. He set up a dead-man's switch tied to his vital signs upstairs. If his heart rate drops below forty beats per minute, the entire hundred billion dollar trust automatically transfers to the federal treasury."

Hailey’s breath hitched. A dead-man's switch. If Alex’s oxygen trap killed Victor and Evelyn upstairs, the entire fortune they had both fought, lied, and bled for would instantly vanish into government accounts, leaving them with nothing.

Alex’s dark eyes narrowed as he stared at the red scrolling code on the laptop screen. All his careful planning, every calculated betrayal, was suddenly hanging by a thread tied to his parents' fading heart rates in the penthouse suite.

"We need to override the dead-man's switch manually," Alex ordered, his voice sharp with sudden urgency. He turned back to Hailey, grabbing her wrist with a grip that left no room for argument. "And we need your biometric signature to do it. The system requires dual authorization from a primary trustee and an external asset to break the federal handoff protocol."

Hailey looked down at her wrist trapped in his grasp, then over at Marcus, who was watching them both with a cold, calculating expression. The realization washed over her with blinding clarity: she was no longer just a prisoner or a scapegoat. She was the absolute key to saving the entire Kingston empire from total forfeiture.

"You need me," Hailey said, a dangerous, defiant spark igniting in her tear-filled blue eyes. "You can't save your fortune without my signature."

"I don't need to save the fortune, Hailey," Alex whispered, his face inches from hers, his voice dropping to a dark, venomous threat. "I just need to make sure you sign your own death warrant before the system locks us out forever."

Before Hailey could pull her arm away, Marcus reached into his coat, pulled out a silenced pistol, and pressed the cold steel barrel directly against the back of Hailey’s head.
