Chapter 3 - The Descent into Silence

The stone steps were slick with moisture and bitter cold. Hailey stumbled repeatedly, her high heels snapping off one by one, leaving her stockings torn and her feet bleeding against the rough masonry. The guards did not slow their pace. They shoved her forward through the narrow, subterranean corridor until the damp smell of earth was replaced by the sterile, buzzing hum of fluorescent lights. They pushed her roughly into a small, windowless interrogation room deep beneath the Kingston estate.
The room was furnished with only a heavy steel table and two bolted-down chairs. In the corner, a single security camera blinked with a small red LED light, recording her every panicked movement. The heavy metal door slammed shut behind her, the lock engaging with a sickeningly definitive thud.
Hailey slumped against the cold concrete wall, sliding down until she sat in a huddled heap on the floor. Her breath came in short, ragged gasps. The sparkling crystal necklace, once a trophy of her impending wealth, now felt like a heavy iron sholdering around her neck. She reached up with trembling, handcuffed hands and managed to unclasp the heavy jewelry, letting it clatter loudly against the concrete.
Minutes bled into hours in the timeless void of the underground bunker. There were no windows to mark the passing of day and night, only the steady, maddening hum of the ventilation system overhead. Just as the silence began to suffocate her mind, the heavy metal door clicked open.
It wasn't Evelyn or Alex who stepped into the room. It was a man Hailey had not seen in months—Marcus Vance, the former head of Kingston corporate security whom she had bribed to alter the estate's floor plans on the night she attacked Evelyn. Marcus looked battered, his left eye swollen shut and his bespoke suit stained with dried mud.
"You!" Hailey hissed, scrambling to her feet. "You promised me the perimeter was clear! You said no one would trace those blueprints back to you!"
Marcus let out a harsh, broken laugh, leaning heavily against the steel door frame. He spat a drop of blood onto the clean concrete floor.
"Clear?" Marcus mocked bitterly. "There is no clear when it comes to the Kingstons, Hailey. They own the judges, the police chiefs, and half the federal prosecutors in this state. You thought you were playing them, but we were all just pieces on their board."
Hailey grabbed the edge of the steel table, her knuckles turning white. "Why are you down here? Did Evelyn send you to finish the job?"
Marcus looked at her with a terrifying mixture of pity and malice. He reached into his coat pocket, pulled out a small, encrypted flash drive, and tossed it onto the table.

"No," Marcus whispered, stepping back out into the hallway. "She sent me to give you the real file. The one about your mother."
