Chapter 6 - The Transfer of Souls

The fluorescent lights overhead flickered once before settling back into a harsh, unblinking hum. Hailey stared at Victor, her mind struggling to comprehend the monstrous reality of his words. Permanent chattel. In the modern world of high finance and corporate law, human beings weren't owned—they were bought out through debt, contracts, and unbreakable NDAs. But looking at the cold, calculating eyes of the Kingston patriarch, she realized civil law meant nothing behind these reinforced steel doors.

"You can't do this," Hailey said, her voice trembling as she backed away until the edge of the steel table pressed into her lower back. "There are laws. There are extradition treaties, human rights lawyers, media outlets—"

"Media outlets?" Alex interrupted, stepping forward with a cruel smile playing on his lips. He pulled his smartphone from his pocket, unlocked it with a quick swipe, and turned the screen toward her.

Hailey glanced down. It was a live broadcast of a major national news network. The breaking news banner flashed in bright red letters: FORMER SOCIALITE HAILEY MORRISON ARRESTED IN MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR FRAUD AND EMBEZZLEMENT RING. Below the headline, the anchor was reporting on her sudden downfall, citing detailed federal indictments, forged wire transfers, and stolen corporate secrets—all of which had been neatly packaged and handed to the Department of Justice less than twenty minutes ago.

"We didn't just ruin your reputation, Hailey," Alex said smoothly, slipping his phone back into his pocket. "We wrote the narrative. By morning, you won't just be a criminal in the eyes of the public; you’ll be a clinical psychiatric patient who suffered a severe psychotic break after losing her fortune."

Hailey felt the floor drop out from beneath her. They hadn't just defeated her; they had erased her identity entirely. No one would ever believe a word she said. Any accusations she leveled against the Kingston family would be dismissed as the frantic ravings of a desperate, unstable criminal trying to escape a life sentence.

Evelyn stepped forward, taking the heavy manila folder from Victor's hands and placing it neatly back onto the table.

"You have two choices, Hailey," Evelyn said calmly, her tone as professional as a CEO discussing a routine merger. "Option one: you sign the total asset forfeiture and confession forms on that screen right now, and you spend the next forty years in a maximum-security federal penitentiary under an assumed name."

Hailey swallowed hard, her throat burning. "And... and option two?"

Victor’s eyes narrowed slightly, a dark, calculating glint flashing in his gray irises. "Option two: you sign a lifetime labor contract working inside the deep-sea research and security facilities owned by Kingston Maritime in the North Atlantic. You work off every single penny of the damage you caused, down to the last cent."

Hailey stared at them in absolute disbelief. Working in the frozen, isolated depths of a corporate black-site rig was a death sentence disguised as a job.

"That's not a choice," Hailey whispered tearfully. "That's modern-day slavery."

"It's called debt settlement," Victor replied coldly, turning toward the door. "Think carefully about your answer, Hailey. Because by sunrise, option one won't even be on the table."
