Chapter 1 - The Weight of Velvet and Blood

The heavy oak doors of the Kingston estate library remained shut tight against the chill of the midnight air. Inside, the cavernous room smelled of aged leather, burning beeswax, and expensive perfume. Hailey knelt on the expanse of crimson wool, her knees aching from the pressure against the hardwood floor beneath. Her elaborate white off-the-shoulder gown, usually a symbol of high society triumph, was now a tangled mess of crushed silk and intricate beaded floral embroidery catching the warm flicker of the wall sconces. A sparkling statement necklace with teardrop crystals dug painfully into her collarbone with every ragged breath she drew.

"Please forgive me..." Hailey choked out, her voice cracking under the sheer weight of her desperation. Her tear-filled blue eyes locked onto the polished leather shoes of the two figures standing directly before her. Tears streamed freely down her pale cheeks, her mouth remaining wide open in a silent, agonizing gasp as she tilted her head back toward the vaulted ceiling.

"I was wrong," Hailey sobbed, her whole body trembling violently as the cold realization of her absolute ruin washed over her. "I did it all because I love Alex."

Evelyn Kingston did not flinch. The middle-aged matriarch stood with her dark brown curly hair pinned back flawlessly, her gold hoop earrings catching the dim light. Clad in a crisp white collared shirt, a black vest, and a sharp black bow tie, Evelyn radiated an imposing, unshakable composure. Beside her, young Alex Kingston stood tall in his dark patterned suit and conservative brown patterned tie, his hands shoved deeply into his trouser pockets. His expression was a mask of cold betrayal and bitter disappointment.

Evelyn tilted her head slightly, her gaze piercing right through Hailey’s elaborate facade.

"Love?" Evelyn asked, her voice dangerously calm, devoid of any emotional spike. "Was it love when you shot me through the leg... when you tied me to a table and sank me in a pool?"

Hailey gasped, choking on her own saliva as the dark memories of her attempted murder surfaced in the terrifying silence of the room. She opened her mouth to deny it, but the chilling facts of her calculated plot hung heavily in the air.

Evelyn stepped forward, the heels of her boots clicking sharply against the floorboards. She looked down at the trembling woman who had tried to steal an empire.

"You love the Kingston family's hundred billion dollar fortune, Hailey."

Alex finally broke his silence, his voice a low, venomous whisper that cut deeper than any blade.

"And now, Hailey, it is time to pay the price for every single lie you told."

Before Hailey could scream, the library doors flew open behind her, and two armed security guards stepped into the room.
