Chapter 2 - Shadows in the Gallery

The cold metal of the handcuffs clicked around Hailey’s wrists, biting sharply into her delicate skin. The rough fabric of the guards' uniforms brushed against her ruined white gown as they hauled her violently to her feet. Her legs felt like lead, barely supporting her weight as the reality of her total capture sank in. Evelyn had not even blinked when the guards grabbed her. The matriarch simply turned her back, walking toward the massive mahogany desk that dominated the far end of the grand library.

"Take her down to the lower archive," Evelyn instructed without turning around, her voice cutting through the quiet room like a scalpel. "And make sure the digital logs from the security server are wiped clean before the local authorities arrive. I want no public spectacle until we legally own every asset she tried to transfer offshore."

Hailey thrashed weakly against the grip of the guards, her diamond-encrusted necklace catching the candlelight and throwing wild, chaotic reflections across the dark bookshelves.

"You can't do this, Evelyn!" Hailey shrieked, her voice losing its previous pathetic tone and turning sharp with panic. "I have copies of the trust documents! If I go down, the federal investigators will see every tax evasion scheme this family ran for the last decade! I am not the only criminal in this room!"

Alex stepped forward, grabbing Hailey by the arm with a grip that left bruises. His dark eyes burned with a terrifying intensity that Hailey had never seen during their months of dating. He leaned in close, his breath smelling faintly of Scotch and mint.

"You think those offshore accounts are still active, Hailey?" Alex whispered, a cold smirk touching the corner of his mouth. "My mother and I spent the last forty-eight hours dismantling your little web of lies before you even stepped foot back into this house. Your safe deposit box in Zurich? Empty. Your Swiss bank accounts? Frozen by court order this morning."

Hailey stopped struggling, her blue eyes widening in absolute horror. All her careful planning, the months of manipulation, the lies told to gain the Kingston trust—it had all evaporated in a single afternoon. She had walked directly into a trap designed by experts who played games far deadlier than she could ever imagine.

"You knew," Hailey whispered, her voice dropping to a hollow rasp. "You knew I was coming back tonight."

"We laid the breadcrumbs, my dear," Evelyn replied, turning slowly to face them, her expression entirely devoid of mercy. "A hundred billion dollars does not protect itself by accident. Now, get her out of my sight."

The guards dragged Hailey backward toward the hidden panel behind the massive bookshelf, revealing a dark, winding stone staircase descending into the damp subterranean depths of the estate.
