Chapter 14 - The Shattered Glass

The deafening crash of shattered glass echoed down through the ventilation shafts, followed by a rush of cold night wind that swept through the subterranean corridors, making the red emergency strobe lights flicker wildly. The biometric scanner on the steel table flashed a solid, brilliant green, accompanied by a triumphant melodic chime that signaled the successful override of the federal handoff protocol.

The scrolling red lines of code on the dual-screen laptop instantly shifted to a calm, steady blue. The countdown timer vanished, replaced by a clean, corporate dashboard displaying the full, unencumbered balance of the Kingston family trust: one hundred billion dollars, fully secured under Alex’s master encryption key.

Marcus lowered the pistol barrel from the back of Hailey’s head, slipping the weapon back into his shoulder holster with a smooth, practiced motion. He didn't look at Hailey; he simply turned his attention to the laptop screen, verifying the transfer integrity.

"The transfer is complete, boss," Marcus reported, his voice entirely professional. "All secondary accounts are locked to your biometric signature. Your parents' override codes have been permanently purged from the system."

Alex let out a slow, measured breath, his shoulders dropping just a fraction as the immense weight of the coup finally settled onto his shoulders. He turned his dark eyes toward Hailey, who was still standing with her hand resting on the biometric scanner, trembling from the sheer adrenaline crash.

"You did it," Hailey whispered, her voice hollow and defeated. She stared at the green light pulsing softly beneath her thumb. "The empire is yours. You won."

Alex stepped closer, reaching out to gently lift her hand away from the scanner. He closed her fingers into a fist, his expression unreadable.

"We won, Hailey," Alex corrected quietly, a strange, chilling intensity returning to his dark gaze. "You wanted a seat at the top table. And now, you have it."

Before Hailey could respond, the heavy steel door of the interrogation room swung completely open, and two armed tactical operatives rushed inside, their rifles raised. But they weren't pointing their weapons at Hailey or Alex. They flanked the doorway, standing at rigid attention as a tall, imposing figure stepped out of the shadows of the hallway.

It wasn't Evelyn. And it wasn't Victor.

It was a woman Hailey had never seen before—an older woman with sharp silver hair tied back in a flawless bun, wearing a tailored black suit and a matching silk scarf. She carried herself with an absolute, terrifying authority that made even Marcus step back and dip his head in immediate deference.

The woman walked slowly into the harsh red light of the room, her piercing gray eyes locking directly onto Alex.

"Well, grandson," the matriarch said, her voice cutting through the silence like a razor blade. "You managed to lock out your parents. But you forgot to check who wrote the master encryption code before you were even born."

Alex froze, the color draining entirely from his face as he stared at the woman standing in the doorway.
