Chapter 10 - The Oxygen Trap

The screen displayed a crystal-clear, high-definition infrared view of the upper penthouse suite. Victor and Evelyn Kingston stood near the massive floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the estate grounds. For the first time since Hailey had met them, the two untouchable patriarchs of the Kingston dynasty looked genuinely panicked. Evelyn was hammering her fists against the reinforced steel blast doors that had slid down from the ceiling, while Victor pressed a heavy security override keycard into a wall terminal that remained completely dark, unresponsive to their commands.

"You're killing your own parents?" Hailey whispered, horror gripping her throat as she watched the live feed. Her voice trembled violently, the gravity of the bloodline she had tried to infiltrate finally revealing its monstrous nature. "They raised you! They built this entire empire for you!"

"They built a prison," Alex corrected coldly, slipping his phone back into his pocket without a shred of remorse. "Every single asset, every contract, every cruel decision they ever made was designed to keep me under their thumb forever. They didn't raise a son, Hailey; they groomed a successor to be their eternal puppet. And I cut the strings."

The emergency red strobe lights continued to pulse, painting the small interrogation room in shades of blood and shadow. The unconscious man on the floor groaned softly, stirring back to life. Alex didn't even glance down at him. He simply turned his attention back to Hailey, his dark eyes locking onto hers with a chilling, predatory focus.

"Which brings us to your role in all of this," Alex said, his voice dropping to a low, measured whisper.

Hailey took a step backward until the edge of the steel table pressed firmly against her lower back. Her fingers gripped the cold metal edge. "My role? You already have the servers. You have the empire. I'm just a ruined criminal in a torn gown. What could you possibly want from me?"

"You're the only living witness who knows the full extent of my parents' corporate crimes," Alex replied smoothly. "And more importantly, you're the legal signatory on every offshore account where the primary capital is currently resting."

Hailey stared at him, her mind racing. "The offshore accounts... you can't access them without my biometric signature and my private encryption phrase."

"Which is why you're going to give them to me," Alex said, stepping closer until she could feel the faint warmth radiating from his tactical vest. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, sleek biometric scanner, placing it neatly on the steel table right beside the unsigned confession forms.

"And if I refuse?" Hailey asked defiantly, lifting her chin despite the overwhelming terror clawing at her chest. "What are you going to do? Lock me in here with dropping oxygen levels too?"

Alex smiled, a cold, calculated expression that didn't reach his eyes. "No, Hailey. If you refuse, I leave this room, I seal your blast door from the outside, and I let my parents' automated security drones finish the cleanup operation they started twenty minutes ago."

Before Hailey could formulate a response, the security speaker embedded in the ceiling hissed to life, broadcasting the frantic, distorted voice of Evelyn Kingston echoing from the upper floors.
