Chapter 11 - The Voice from Above

The frantic, metallic voice of Evelyn Kingston echoed down through the ventilation ducts, bouncing off the concrete walls of the underground interrogation room.
"Alex! You arrogant fool! You think a simple firewall can lock out the master encryption keys? The federal board already has our secondary offline backups!"
Alex didn't even flinch. He reached up, tapped a small button on his wrist communicator, and spoke directly into the channel with absolute calm.
"The secondary backups were wiped forty-eight hours ago, Mother," Alex replied, his voice carrying clearly through the estate's entire intercom system. "You taught me to never leave a trace. I merely applied your own lessons to your legacy."
A sharp, violent crash echoed through the speaker as Evelyn slammed something heavy against the blast doors upstairs, followed by the faint, muffled sound of Victor shouting angry commands in the background. Then, the audio feed abruptly cut out with a harsh burst of static, leaving the underground room wrapped once again in the heavy, ominous hum of the red emergency strobe lights.
Hailey stood frozen, watching Alex with a profound sense of dread. The monster standing before her wasn't an aberration of the Kingston family; he was their ultimate, logical evolution. He possessed his mother’s cold calculation combined with his father’s ruthless ambition, stripped of any remaining familial pretense or emotional attachment.
"You see, Hailey?" Alex said softly, turning his dark eyes back toward her. "There is no escape hatch. There is no cavalry coming to save either of us. My parents are out of time, and you are out of options."
He tapped the sleek biometric scanner resting on the steel table. A soft green light blinked twice, waiting for input.
"The private encryption phrase, Hailey. Give it to me, and I ensure you walk out of this estate tonight with a clean slate, a new identity, and enough capital to start over anywhere in the world."
Hailey looked down at the scanner, then up at the young man who had once pretended to love her. She knew better than to trust a Kingston promise. If she gave him the keys, she became a loose end—and loose ends in this family had a habit of disappearing permanently before sunrise.
"And if I give it to you," Hailey whispered, her voice steadying despite the terror in her chest, "what stops you from pressing the exact same button on me that you're using on your parents right now?"
Alex paused, a flicker of genuine surprise crossing his sharp features. He didn't answer immediately. He stepped closer, his dark gaze piercing right through her defenses.
"Because unlike my parents, Hailey," Alex said quietly, his voice dropping to an intimate murmur, "you and I are cut from the exact same cloth. We both know what it's like to claw our way up from the bottom of the pile."

Before Hailey could process the chilling implication of his words, the heavy metal door behind them swung completely wide open, revealing a tall, imposing figure standing in the corridor.
