Chapter 13 - The Barrel and the Code

The cold steel of the pistol barrel pressed firmly against the base of Hailey’s skull, sending a shiver of pure ice down her spine. The red emergency strobe lights continued to pulse against the concrete walls, casting a rhythmic, bloody glow over the small interrogation room. Marcus held the weapon with the steady, practiced ease of a veteran mercenary, his expression entirely devoid of hesitation or remorse.

"Don't test him, Miss Morrison," Marcus warned, his voice low and flat. "The boss has the keys, but I have the trigger. If you don't place your thumb on that scanner right now, your brain will decorate this concrete wall before the system even registers the error code."

Alex didn't try to stop Marcus. He stood calmly beside the dual-screen laptop, his dark eyes locked onto Hailey’s face, watching her evaluate her dwindling chances of survival. The red lines of code on the screen continued to scroll downward at a dizzying pace, accompanied by a low, rhythmic warning chime that signaled the rapidly approaching expiration of the dead-man's switch.

Hailey’s heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird. Every instinct screamed at her to fight back, to run, to scream. But her legs felt like lead, and the heavy metal barrel at the back of her head kept her completely pinned in place. She looked down at the sleek biometric scanner resting on the steel table right beside the unsigned confession forms and the Kingston Maritime labor contract.

"If I give you the signature," Hailey whispered, her voice trembling slightly, "what guarantees do I have that you won't pull that trigger the second the transfer clears?"

Alex let out a quiet, cold laugh. He leaned over the dual-screen interface, typing a rapid sequence of commands into the keyboard before looking back up at her.

"You don't have any guarantees, Hailey," Alex said smoothly, his tone as casual as if they were discussing the weather. "In this family, trust is a fairy tale told to children to keep them weak. You wanted a piece of a hundred billion dollar empire. This is what it costs. Now, press your thumb to the glass, or watch everything we fought for vanish into thin air."

The warning chime on the laptop suddenly shifted to a higher, frantic pitch. The countdown timer in the top right corner of the screen flashed three red zeros: 00:00:45. Forty-five seconds before the federal handoff protocol locked the entire Kingston trust away forever.

Marcus pressed the pistol barrel a fraction harder against her skull, the metal biting sharply into her skin. "Thirty seconds, boss."

Hailey squeezed her eyes shut, a single tear escaping her blue eyes and rolling down her pale cheek. She knew that signing the override meant sealing her own fate as a permanent prisoner of the Kingston dynasty. But the alternative—watching the empire she had ruined her life to steal slip away into the hands of the federal government—was an even greater defeat.

With a ragged breath, she lifted her right hand, pressed her thumb firmly against the glass surface of the biometric scanner, and held it there as the device flashed a brilliant, blinding green.

A sharp, deafening explosion echoed from deep within the ceiling above, followed immediately by the sudden, violent shattering of the reinforced glass penthouse windows.
