Chapter 8 - The Estate's Dark Shadow

The black town car sped away into the foggy night like a ghost, leaving Clara and Marcus standing on the deserted sidewalk outside the boutique. Without a word, Marcus pulled out his satellite phone, punching in a rapid sequence of override codes to summon the tactical response unit assigned to the Vance family estate.
"Get me the tactical team," Marcus ordered into the phone, his tone clipped and urgent. "Code Red at the primary residence. Biometric lockdown has been compromised. We need immediate extraction and medical reinforcement."
Clara climbed into the passenger seat of Marcus’s personal backup vehicle—a heavily reinforced, unmarked SUV parked discreetly around the corner. Her knuckles were white as she gripped the leather dashboard, her mind racing through the complex security architecture of the family home she had grown up in.
"They used the secondary maintenance tunnel," Clara said aloud, analyzing the digital blueprint flashing on her encrypted tablet. "Dad's medical wing was built over an old structural vault from the nineteen-sixties. The only people who knew about the manual air intake valves in that tunnel were Dad, myself, and..." She paused, the terrifying name forming on her lips. "...head of security Miller."
Marcus shifted the SUV into drive, the engine roaring to life as they tore down the empty highway toward the gated hills. "Miller has been with the company for twenty years. He survived three corporate mergers."
"He also managed Vivian's offshore accounts," Clara countered coldly, her eyes fixed on the streaming security cameras feeding live data from the estate's perimeter. "She didn't hatch this conspiracy alone. She was just the front-facing weapon. Miller was the architect."
As the SUV crested the winding hill leading to the massive iron gates of the Vance estate, the scene unfolding through the windshield was catastrophic. The security guard booth was dark, the automated gate hanging lazily off its hinges. Smoke was billowing faintly from the auxiliary generator housing near the western perimeter wall.
Marcus killed the headlights a hundred yards from the entrance, steering the SUV silently onto the grass alongside the road. He pulled a suppressed tactical firearm from the center console, checking the chamber with a practiced, fluid motion.
"Stay in the vehicle, Miss Clara. I'll clear the approach," Marcus instructed, his hand resting on the door handle.
"No," Clara said, pushing her car door open and stepping out into the chilly night air. "It's my father inside. I'm going with you."
May you like
Before Marcus could argue, a sudden, blinding flash of light erupted from the second-floor window of the estate's medical wing, followed immediately by the dull, muffled thud of a small explosive charge blowing out the reinforced glass.
