Chapter 1 - The Marble Trap

The cool, polished expanse of the white Carrara marble floor pressed firmly against Clara Vance’s palms as she drew in a sharp, unsteady breath. Her beige heel lay a few feet away, tipped awkwardly on its side like a broken twig, while her simple grey dress bunched slightly around her knees. Above her, Vivian Vance stood rigid and unyielding in her tailored black pantsuit, her sharp ponytail whipping slightly as she glared down with an expression of venomous contempt. Red lipstick framed Vivian’s mouth tightly, pulling back into a snarl that exposed zero warmth, only a bitter, predatory satisfaction.

"Look at you, pathetic and clumsy, stumbling right into my territory," Vivian hissed, her voice cutting through the hushed tension of the high-end boutique.

Clara winced slightly, pushing herself up onto one knee, brushing a stray lock of dark hair from her face. "Vivian, you didn't even look where you were going. You deliberately stepped into my path."

"Don't you dare speak to me, you miserable fraud," Vivian snapped back, stepping closer, her eyes flashing with pure rage. "You think you can just wander into my store in that cheap dress and pretend you belong here? You are nothing. Stay away from my store, trash!"

Clara maintained a strange, unsettling calm beneath her ruffled exterior. "Your store? Are you entirely sure about that, Vivian?"

"Positive," Vivian barked, crossing her arms tightly over her chest. "Every square inch of this flagship boutique belongs to the Vance empire, an empire built by my sweat and my vision, while you were hiding in the shadows begging for scraps. Security!"

Around them, wealthy afternoon shoppers gasped in absolute shock, pressing their backs against racks of silk and velvet as the revolving glass doors at the front entrance began to spin. A tall man in a crisp black suit, dark sunglasses, and a perfectly straight black tie strode purposefully through the entryway, moving with absolute authority. He ignored Vivian entirely, bypassed the stunned onlookers, and walked straight toward the kneeling woman on the floor.

The tall bodyguard bowed low, his posture respectful and rigid.

"Owner's daughter, forgive our late arrival," the bodyguard said smoothly.

Vivian froze, her mouth dropping open, her eyes widening in sheer, unadulterated terror as the horrifying reality began to set in.

"The daughter?!" Vivian shrieked.
