Chapter 10 - The Vault's Secret

Arthur Vance clutched Clara's sleeve with surprising strength for a man who had just survived an assassination attempt. Marcus knelt beside them, pressing a secure communication link into his ear to summon the emergency medical extraction team waiting outside the perimeter gates.
"The vault..." Arthur repeated, coughing weakly as Marcus helped him sit up against the base of the marble sink. "The underground vault beneath the flagship store. That's where the original handwritten incorporation charter is kept. If Miller gets his hands on the charter... he can legally dissolve the Vance Trust entirely."
Clara wiped a smudge of dust from her father's forehead, her expression hardening into absolute steel. "Why the charter, Dad? Why would dissolving the trust matter if he already looted the offshore accounts?"
"Because the offshore accounts were just a distraction," Arthur explained between breaths, his eyes wide with a desperate urgency. "The shell companies... they were funded by a massive foreign conglomerate trying to orchestrate a hostile takeover of our entire real estate portfolio. To complete the acquisition legally, they need the original founder's signature on the charter. My signature. Or... an heir's signature under duress."
Marcus's satphone crackled to life with static. "Marcus, report. We have secured the perimeter gates, but our radar picked up a black utility van speeding away from the northern service road toward the downtown retail district."
"That's where they're heading," Clara said, standing up sharply from the bathroom floor. Her grey dress was stained with dust and a smudge of blood, but her posture radiated an intense, focused authority that commanded absolute obedience. "They're going back to the flagship store to access the sub-level archive vault."
Marcus stood up, pocketing his comms device. "We can intercept them on the highway if we take the tunnel shortcut. But Miss Clara, it's a trap. Miller knows we'll follow."
"Let him think he's leading us into a trap," Clara replied, her voice dangerously calm. She walked over to the shattered window, looking out across the sprawling estate toward the distant city skyline where the lights of the flagship store pierced the night sky. "Miller thinks I'm just a designer who stumbled into a boardroom. He doesn't know that Dad taught me every security protocol, every architectural flaw, and every hidden passage in that building."
Arthur reached out, his weak hand touching Clara's wrist. "Be careful, my girl. Miller is desperate, and desperate men are infinitely more dangerous than greedy ones."

"Don't worry, Dad," Clara said softly, leaning down to kiss his forehead. "The Vance empire isn't going to fall to a thief."
