Chapter 12 - The Inside Switch

Inside the archive vault, Miller didn't panic. He walked calmly over to the heavy steel control panel beside the massive iron safe, pulled a small multi-tool from his pocket, and unscrewed the metal access plate covering the manual override gears. Behind him, Vivian let out a muffled cry of terror, straining against the ropes binding her to the metal chair, her eyes wide with desperate warning.

"Save your breath, Ms. Vivian," Miller sneered, tossing the metal plate aside. "You were always just a useful idiot. A loud, aggressive distraction while I systematically drained the operational accounts and prepared the legal framework for our foreign buyers to take over the entire retail network. You thought you were the queen bee, but you were just a worker ant."

Through the intercom speaker, Clara listened to every word from the security control room upstairs, where Marcus stood beside her monitoring the thermal feeds.

"He's accessing the manual gear train," Marcus said, his hands flying across the control console. "If he engages the emergency release before the federal transport units arrive in five minutes, he'll blow the vault door and escape through the maintenance tunnels."

Clara stared at the monitor, watching Miller's hands deftly manipulate the gears inside the control panel. She didn't hesitate. She reached out and pulled down the master circuit breaker handle on the main security board, cutting power to the entire sub-level grid.

Down in the vault, the emergency lighting flickered and died, plunging the windowless room into absolute, pitch-black darkness. Miller cursed loudly, dropping his multi-tool as it clattered against the concrete floor.

"You think darkness slows me down, princess?" Miller shouted into the air, pulling a tactical flashlight from his belt and clicking it on. The bright beam cut sharply through the dust particles dancing in the stale air.

He turned back to the control panel, blindly jamming his fingers into the open gear mechanism to force the manual release lever. But as he pulled down with all his weight, a loud metallic snap echoed through the room. The internal gear teeth, jammed by a small titanium locking pin Clara had remotely dropped into the track from the control room above, shattered instantly.

The manual release lever spun loosely in Miller's hand, completely detached from the locking mechanism.

Miller stared at the broken handle in disbelief, his smug confidence finally shattering completely as the reality of his trap set in.
