Chapter 2 - The Crimson Ledger

The silence that followed the bodyguard's declaration was so absolute that the faint hum of the overhead track lighting sounded like a roaring engine. Vivian stood paralyzed, her mouth still hanging open in a grotesque caricature of shock, her red lips parting to reveal a dry tongue. The black pantsuit that had moments ago felt like a suit of armor now felt like a straitjacket restricting her lungs. Clara slowly stood up, using the edge of a mahogany display counter to steady herself, her grey dress falling gracefully back into place as she slipped her bare foot back into the beige heel.
"Did you honestly think," Clara said, her voice dropping an octave into a chillingly calm register, "that Dad would hand over the flagship store, the international logistics, and the generational trust to a daughter who treats human beings like garbage?"
Vivian stumbled backward half a step, her heels clicking sharply against the pristine marble. Her brain raced frantically, trying to piece together a reality she had aggressively denied for the past five years. "No. That's impossible. Dad signed the operational transfer papers months ago. I hold the majority voting shares in the Vance Group board. You've been living abroad, painting, doing whatever useless hobbies you chase. You gave up your corporate rights!"
The bodyguard, whose name tag read Marcus, straightened up from his bow, keeping his eyes respectfully fixed on Clara's face. He reached inside his black suit jacket and pulled out a heavy, leather-bound folio stamped with gold corporate insignia.
"Operational transfer was contingent upon behavioral audits and ethical compliance, Ms. Vivian," Marcus stated evenly, his deep voice carrying across the entire boutique. "The board finalized the primary beneficiary amendment this morning at nine o'clock. Miss Clara is now the sole executive director of Vance Global Retail."
Vivian shook her head violently, the neat ponytail whipping against her collar. "You're lying. Both of you. This is a setup, a pathetic prank!" She lunged forward, her hand outstretched to snatch the leather folio from Marcus's grip.
Clara didn't flinch. She simply raised two fingers, and Marcus effortlessly sidestepped Vivian, blocking her path with a single, immovable forearm. Vivian rebounded off his chest, her expensive makeup beginning to crack under the sudden surge of sweat and adrenaline.

"If you touch that document, Vivian, it won't just be your management position you lose," Clara warned softly, stepping close enough that Vivian could smell her expensive jasmine perfume. "It will be your entire inheritance. Do you want to see the forensic audit report on your department's missing funds right now, or would you prefer a private meeting in the executive suite upstairs?"
