Chapter 7 - The Monitor's Pulse

The private elevator ride back down to the ground floor felt entirely different than it had hours earlier. The quiet triumph of reclaiming the boardroom was instantly obliterated by the glowing screen of Clara's phone. The photograph of her father's medical monitor wasn't just a threat; it was a clear indication that someone inside the inner circle—someone with biometric clearance to the private medical wing—had just compromised his life support systems.

"Marcus," Clara said, her voice dropping into a dangerous, icy whisper as the elevator doors opened to the darkened flagship store. "Change of plans. We aren't going to the airport."

Marcus instantly changed his stride, falling into a protective tactical formation as they stepped out onto the marble floor. "Has the security protocol at the estate been breached?"

"The medical wing," Clara replied, tapping her phone rapidly to pull up the encrypted security feed of her father's private residence in the hills. "Someone bypassed the primary biometric firewall at 12:14 AM. The local nursing staff's panic buttons were manually jammed from the main control panel."

As they hurried through the revolving glass doors out into the cool midnight air, a sleek black town car pulled up smoothly to the curb, its headlights cutting through the foggy streetlamps. The rear door popped open automatically. But instead of the regular driver, a tall, unfamiliar figure sat in the driver's seat, wearing dark leather driving gloves.

Clara stopped dead in her tracks, her hand gripping Marcus's forearm. "Don't get in."

Marcus reacted instantly, drawing his body in front of Clara and reaching inside his suit jacket, his hand closing firmly around the handle of a concealed tactical baton. "Identify yourself," Marcus demanded, his voice echoing sharply off the concrete sidewalk.

The driver slowly turned his head, wearing a standard courier cap pulled low over his forehead. He didn't speak, but instead held up a small, blinking electronic device through the rolled-down window. It was a digital decryption key, broadcasting a high-frequency override signal directly toward the front entrance of the Vance boutique.

"Miss Clara Vance," a synthesized, distorted voice emitted from the device's tiny speaker. "Your father's oxygen regulators are currently set to forty percent capacity. You have precisely twenty minutes to hand over the master decryption keys to the corporate encryption vault, or the primary oxygen valve will close permanently."

Clara stared at the device, her chest tightening as the terrifying reality of the blackmail became crystal clear. This wasn't just a corporate coup; it was an assassination disguised as a hostile takeover.

"Where is Vivian?" Clara asked, her voice shaking with a fury far deeper than the anger she had shown in the boutique.

The driver smiled slowly, revealing a stark silver tooth in the dim light. "Your sister is currently locked in the basement of the estate, wondering why she trusted amateurs to finish what she started."
