Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Rebellion

The mahogany doors of the main conference room swung open with a muffled, expensive thud. Around the massive, custom-built oval table sat twelve of the most powerful stakeholders and executive vice presidents in the retail industry. Conversations ceased instantly. Heads turned in unison. Every eye locked onto Clara as she entered, flanked by Marcus, while Vivian trailed behind like a disgraced prisoner marching toward the gallows.
Chief Financial Officer Arthur Pendelton adjusted his gold-rimmed glasses, clearing his throat nervously. "Miss Clara Vance. We... we weren't expecting your direct intervention today. The board was under the impression that Miss Vivian was handling the retail division's restructuring."
Clara walked calmly to the head of the table, gently placing her hands on the polished mahogany. She did not take the high-backed leather chair immediately. Instead, she let her gaze sweep across the faces of the men and women who had nodded along to Vivian’s aggressive expansion strategies for years.
"Miss Vivian was indeed handling things, Arthur," Clara said, her voice clear, resonant, and entirely unshakeable. "Handling them straight into a federal investigation for labor exploitation and material fraud."
A collective murmur erupted around the table. Several board members sat up straight, while others exchanged uneasy glances. Vivian slammed her hands down onto the table, rattling the crystal water pitchers.
"Don't listen to her!" Vivian screamed, her voice cracking slightly with desperation. "She has been out of the country for five years! She doesn't understand modern market pressures! She's trying a hostile takeover of our family's legacy out of sheer sibling jealousy!"
Arthur Pendelton looked between the two sisters, his brow furrowed with genuine concern. "Miss Clara, these are very serious allegations. Without concrete documentation, the board cannot simply overturn executive leadership based on family disputes. We have binding contracts, and the quarterly projections are currently green."
Clara nodded slowly, entirely unruffled by the CFO's pushback. She tilted her head toward Marcus. "Play file four-alpha on the main projector, please."
Marcus tapped the tablet in his hand. The massive projection screen at the front of the boardroom flickered to life, illuminating the dark room with high-definition video footage of a dimly lit overseas warehouse. The video clearly showed workers manufacturing counterfeit Vance luxury tags and attaching them to cheap, synthetic garments, while a local plant manager openly discussed kickbacks funneled directly to a shell company registered under Vivian's private initials.
The room fell into a dead silence, broken only by the hum of the projector.

Vivian stared at the screen, her lips trembling, all the color entirely drained from her face as the board members turned their cold, calculating eyes slowly toward her.
