Chapter 11 - The Sub-Level Descent

The heavy steel doors of the sub-level archive vault at the flagship store bore deep, ugly scorch marks where an industrial plasma torch had recently cut through the primary deadbolts. Inside the chilled, windowless room, rows of heavy metal filing cabinets stood like silent sentinels under the flickering emergency lighting.

Miller stood in the center of the room, his black security uniform jacket discarded, his shirtsleeves rolled up to reveal thick, muscular arms stained with soot. Bound securely to a heavy metal chair nearby sat Vivian, her hair tangled, her makeup completely ruined by tear tracks, gagged tightly with industrial packing tape.

Miller carefully pried open the massive, century-old iron safe set into the back wall of the archive. Inside, resting on a velvet cushion, lay the original leather-bound incorporation charter stamped with the golden seal of the Vance family.

"Almost had you convinced you were running an empire, didn't you, princess?" Miller muttered to himself with a cruel grin, reaching out to lift the heavy document from the safe.

Suddenly, the heavy steel entrance door of the archive vault slammed shut with a resounding, thunderous crash. The electronic locking mechanism engaged automatically, locking the heavy deadbolts into place with a series of loud, mechanical clicks.

Miller spun around, dropping the charter back onto the shelf as his hand instinctively flew to the holster at his hip. "Who's there?!" he barked into the shadows of the narrow hallway outside the inner vault.

The small digital intercom speaker set into the wall crackled to life. Clara's voice echoed through the archive room, cool, amplified, and entirely devoid of fear.

"Game's over, Miller," Clara's voice resonated through the space. "You're locked in the central vault. The air circulation has been diverted, and local authorities are currently surrounding the perimeter doors upstairs."

Miller laughed darkly, stepping over to the intercom speaker and pressing the override button. "You locked me in? Miss Clara, you don't seem to understand the architecture of this building. This vault was designed during the Cold War. It has its own independent power supply, an oxygen reserve that lasts for forty-eight hours, and most importantly..." He paused, flashing a wicked smile at the security camera mounted in the corner. "...the emergency release switch is entirely mechanical, located right here on the inside."
