Chapter 8: The Confrontation

Healing is rarely a straight line. Just as the household was beginning to find its rhythm, the past made a desperate attempt to claw its way back.

While Nicholas was reviewing blueprints for the clinic's expansion in his study, Maria hurried in, her face pale.

""Mr. Vance, Victoria has breached the outer driveway. The police have been dispatched, but she’s at the front courtyard demanding to speak with you.""

Nicholas stood immediately, his jaw tightening. ""Ensure Lily stays in the conservatory with Evelyn. Lock the side doors.""

When Nicholas stepped onto the front terrace, Victoria stood by the fountain, disheveled and frantic. The polished socialite of two months ago had vanished, replaced by a desperate woman facing imminent indictment and social ruin.

""Nicholas! You have to drop these charges!"" Victoria cried out, her voice echoing off the stone walls. ""You're destroying my family's name! It was a misunderstanding—the child was misbehaving, I only put her in time-out!""

Nicholas walked down the steps, his presence commanding and unyielding.

""You locked a terrified four-year-old in a pitch-black cellar for three hours while you drank champagne upstairs,"" Nicholas said, his voice deadly quiet. ""You stole from sick children to cover your family's debts. You do not get to speak of misunderstandings.""

""I was going to be your wife!"" she screamed. ""I gave you status! I gave this cold, miserable house a hostess!""

""This house didn't need a hostess, Victoria,"" Nicholas replied with absolute finality. ""It needed a heart. And you brought only cruelty.""

The sound of distant police sirens cut through the morning air. Victoria took a step back, realizing the cold stone walls of Vance Manor would no longer shield her from the consequences of her actions. As the patrol cars pulled into the drive, Nicholas turned his back on her, walking back inside without looking back once.
