Chapter 3: An Unexpected Stranger

The morning sun brought a brittle, pale light through the arched windows of the breakfast parlor. Lily sat quietly, pushing pieces of pancake around her plate without eating. Maria hovered nearby, setting down a pot of warm chamomile tea.

""Sir,"" Maria said gently, stepping closer to Nicholas, ""there is a woman at the main gate. She says she’s here regarding the Vance Foundation scholarship program, but she insists on speaking with you directly.""

Nicholas rubbed the bridge of his nose. ""Tell her to make an appointment with my executive assistant in the city.""

""I tried, Mr. Vance,"" Maria replied hesitantly. ""She said her name is Dr. Evelyn Reed. She mentioned she used to work with Mrs. Vance at the children’s community clinic.""

Nicholas paused, the teacup halting halfway to his mouth. Clara had poured her soul into that clinic in the historic downtown district, a project Nicholas had quietly kept funded but largely neglected since her death.

Minutes later, Evelyn Reed walked into the foyer. She wore a simple charcoal trench coat and sensible boots, carrying a leather portfolio worn at the corners. She had a calm, observant gaze and an air of quiet resilience that stood in stark contrast to the hollow glamour of the people Nicholas usually entertained.

""Mr. Vance,"" Evelyn said, extending a hand. ""I apologize for coming unannounced. I read about last night’s abrupt gala closure. More importantly, I came because Clara made me promise to check on Lily if things ever felt too quiet up here.""

Lily, peeking from behind the dining room doorway, looked at the stranger with wide, guarded eyes.

Evelyn didn't move toward the girl. Instead, she knelt down right where she stood on the marble floor, opening her portfolio to reveal an assortment of vibrant watercolor paints and textured sketchbooks. She didn't look at Lily; she simply began mixing a splash of cerulean blue with lemon yellow.

Curiosity, ancient and instinctual, stirred in Lily’s eyes.
