Chapter 4: The Language of Color

For the first time in eighteen months, Nicholas allowed an outsider into the private inner sanctum of the estate. Evelyn wasn’t just a pediatrician; she specialized in childhood developmental trauma, having spent years running art-therapy workshops in Clara’s community center.

""Trauma steals a child’s vocabulary,"" Evelyn explained to Nicholas in his study, while Lily sat at the low coffee table across the room, watching Evelyn lay out drawing pads. ""When you are locked away, the brain learns that speaking is dangerous. We have to give her another way to speak before the silence hardens into permanent fear.""

Nicholas watched from behind his mahogany desk. ""I want the best specialists in the country flown in. Money is no object.""

""Lily doesn't need imported specialists, Mr. Vance,"" Evelyn said calmly, turning her steady gaze on him. ""She needs presence. She needs to know that when she reaches out, someone is there to catch her—not just someone who can pay the bill.""

The directness of her words stung, but Nicholas couldn't deny their truth.

Over the next two hours, Evelyn worked with patient, quiet rhythm. She didn't ask Lily about the dark room or Victoria. She simply painted a small house with a broad, open window.

After forty minutes of hesitant watching, Lily crawled forward on her knees. She picked up a thick brush, dipped it into charcoal black paint, and drew a thick, heavy box over the corner of the paper. Then, inside the box, she painted a tiny yellow dot.

""Is that a light inside?"" Evelyn asked gently.

Lily nodded once, her voice barely a whisper. ""Barnaby held the light so the shadows wouldn't bite.""

Nicholas had to turn his face toward the window to hide the tremor in his jaw.
