Chapter 6: A Walk Through the Garden

Spring began to soften the rigid geometry of the Vance estate. The high iron gates, once a symbol of exclusion, were left open during the day as local craftsmen worked to restore the old glass conservatory in the back garden.
Nicholas took a leave of absence from his board duties, choosing to stay home. It was an awkward adjustment. Accustomed to commanding hundreds of executives, he found himself utterly clumsy when asked to braid Lily’s hair or prepare her afternoon snack.
""Daddy, you're making the braid crooked,"" Lily giggled from the bench in the rose garden.
It was the first time Nicholas had heard her laugh in months. The sound was fragile, like thin porcelain, but it resonated deeper in his chest than any successful business deal ever had.
""Let me try again,"" Nicholas said, patiently unweaving the strands. ""Your mother used to do this with one hand while holding a coffee cup. I have no idea how she managed.""
""Mommy said hair is like vines—you just have to guide it where the sun is,"" Lily said softly.
Evelyn, who was pruning the overgrown hydrangeas nearby, smiled. ""Your mother was right, Lily. Plants and people grow toward the light if you give them room.""
Lily stood up and walked toward a small patch of damp soil beneath a stone wall. She crouched down, examining a tiny green sprout pushing its way through the cold earth.
""Look, Daddy,"" Lily called out, pointing with her small finger. ""It was under the dark dirt, but it didn't die.""

Nicholas knelt beside her, his hand resting gently on her small shoulder. ""No, it didn't. It just needed time to find the sun.""
