Chapter 13: Learning to Trust

As winter approached, the dynamic within the household deepened. Evelyn continued her visits, transitioning from a clinical therapist to a trusted family friend.
One Saturday afternoon, the three of them set out to bake bread in the large, industrial kitchen of the mansion—a room that had previously been the exclusive domain of hired caterers.
Flour dusted the marble countertops, and Lily had a streak of white dough across her nose.
""Daddy, you're kneading it too hard! You'll squish the air out!"" Lily scolded playfully, mimicking Evelyn's gentle technique.
""I am an engineer, Lily,"" Nicholas laughed, holding up flour-covered hands. ""I apply precise structural pressure.""
""Bread isn't concrete, Mr. Vance,"" Evelyn teased, brushing flour off the rolling pin. ""It requires patience, not pressure.""
The kitchen filled with the rich, comforting scent of baking yeast and cinnamon. As they sat around the rustic wooden breakfast table, sharing warm slices fresh from the oven, Nicholas looked at Lily.
Her cheeks were rosy, her laughter was unrestrained, and her hazel eyes were bright with unburdened joy. The bruises had faded long ago, and the invisible scars were finally knitting together under the warmth of unconditional love.
