Chapter 7: The Downtown Clinic

Two weeks later, Nicholas took Lily out of the estate for the first time since the gala. They drove to the downtown district, pulling up before the red-brick facade of the Clara Vance Memorial Children’s Center.
The neighborhood was bustling with working families, street vendors, and children playing hopscotch on the sidewalk. It was loud, vibrant, and utterly devoid of the stiff formality that defined Nicholas's world.
Lily held her father’s hand tightly as they stepped inside. The lobby was filled with colorful murals, hand-drawn pictures taped to the walls, and the sound of soft acoustic guitar music drifting from a therapy room down the hall.
""Clara designed this space herself,"" Evelyn said, greeting them at the reception desk. ""She wanted the ceilings low and the colors warm so children wouldn't feel dwarfed by the architecture.""
Nicholas looked around, seeing his late wife’s touch in every wooden beam and sunlight-filled alcove. For two years, he had treated this place as a tax write-off and an emotional burden too heavy to visit. Now, standing here with Lily, he saw it for what it truly was: Clara’s living legacy of empathy.
A small boy with a leg brace wobbled past, dropping a toy car near Lily’s feet.
Lily hesitated. She looked at Nicholas, who gave her a gentle nod of encouragement. Slowly, Lily picked up the car, took two steps forward, and handed it back to the boy.
""Thank you,"" the boy said with a broad grin before rolling away.
Lily looked back at Nicholas, a quiet spark of confidence igniting in her eyes. ""I helped him, Daddy.""

""You did, sweetheart,"" Nicholas said, feeling a warmth spread through his chest that had been absent for far too long.
