Chapter 14: The Sunflower Painting

A year after the night of the broken gala, the restored glass conservatory was in full bloom.

In the center of the conservatory stood an easel. Lily, now six years old, had spent the entire week working on a large canvas, refusing to let Nicholas see it until it was completely finished.

On a bright Sunday morning, she took Nicholas by the hand and led him through the glass doors.

""Close your eyes, Daddy,"" Lily instructed with great authority.

Nicholas obeyed, smiling as he allowed himself to be guided across the stone floor.

""Okay... open!""

Before him stood a vibrant painting. In the center was a massive, radiant sunflower stretching toward a warm golden sky. Beneath the flower were two figures holding hands—a tall man in a simple coat and a little girl holding a teddy bear. Surrounding them was not a stone wall, but a circle of open windows through which light poured from every direction.

In the bottom corner, written in clumsy, earnest handwriting, were the words:

*Our Sun House - by Lily and Daddy.*

Nicholas knelt down, wrapping his arms tightly around his daughter. He buried his face in her hair, feeling a deep, overwhelming gratitude that words could never capture.

""It’s the most beautiful building I have ever seen,"" Nicholas whispered.
