Chapter 1: The Shattered Gala

The chandelier above the grand marble foyer cast sharp prisms of light across the wreckage below: a fractured crystal goblet, spilled vintage wine like pooling ink, a bruised white rose, and five-year-old Lily trembling in the center.
Nicholas Vance felt the world narrow into a single, razor-sharp focus. Just moments earlier, the grand ballroom had been alive with the quiet murmur of high-society donors and high-stakes investors celebrating the Vance Foundation’s annual charity gala. But the instant Lily’s muffled cries echoed into the hall, the gilded illusion shattered.
Nicholas knelt on the cold Italian marble, oblivious to the tailored crease of his three-piece suit. His fingers were steady as he gently checked Lily’s small, bruised forearms. Her dress was smudged with soot and dust, and her tiny knuckles were white from clutching her worn beige teddy bear, Barnaby.
""What happened to you, Lily?"" Nicholas asked, his deep voice dropping to a low, protective hum meant to keep the terror at bay.
Tears cut clean tracks through the dust on Lily’s cheeks. She raised a shaking finger, pointing past him toward the sweeping dual staircase.
""She... she locked me in the dark,"" Lily sobbed, her breath hitching in her chest. ""She said good little girls stay out of sight.""
Nicholas turned slowly. Standing midway down the staircase was Victoria Sterling, draped in an immaculate silver satin gown, diamond earrings catching the cool blue ambient lights. Her left hand held a half-empty champagne flute; her right hand flew to her mouth in faux horror.
""Nicholas, darling, she’s confused—she must have slipped into the storage cellar while playing,"" Victoria stammered, her polished smile fraying at the edges.
Nicholas stood up, every inch of his towering frame radiating cold fury. ""Give me the key. Now.""
""Nicholas, please, everyone is watching—""
""The key, Victoria.""
Maria, the estate’s veteran housekeeper, stepped forward quietly, taking Lily into a gentle, shielding embrace. Lily buried her face into Maria’s apron, her tiny shoulders shuddering.

Nicholas didn’t wait for Victoria to answer. He took two deliberate steps toward the foot of the stairs. ""You will never touch my daughter again. Get out of my house.""
