Chapter 5: Unraveling the Facade

While Lily took small steps toward healing, Nicholas turned his attention to dismantling the web of deceit Victoria Sterling had woven around his household.

Sitting in his private downtown office, Nicholas reviewed the forensic accounting files and background checks provided by his chief investigator, Marcus.

""It wasn't just opportunism, Nicholas,"" Marcus said, laying a thick dossier across the glass desk. ""Victoria’s family firm was bordering on insolvency when you two met. She systematically isolated Lily from the household staff, firing anyone who showed genuine affection for the girl, including her previous nanny.""

Nicholas’s fingers gripped the edge of the desk until his knuckles turned white. ""And the board members at the Foundation?""

""She was quietly diverting secondary grants intended for the downtown clinic into an offshore shell company under her brother’s name,"" Marcus confirmed. ""She knew that as long as she played the role of the devoted future stepmother, you wouldn't scrutinize the financial disclosures.""

Nicholas closed the file with a sharp snap. The betrayal was staggering, but what horrified him most was his own complicity through absence. He had buried his grief in corporate expansions and merger acquisitions, leaving his most precious treasure in the hands of a predator in satin.

""File the criminal complaints immediately,"" Nicholas ordered, his voice cold and resolute. ""Every dollar stolen from the clinic must be returned. And ensure the restraining order regarding Lily is ironclad.""

""Consider it done,"" Marcus nodded.

Nicholas stood and looked out over the sprawling skyline. The towering skyscrapers looked empty, nothing more than cold glass and steel. He realized then that building structures meant nothing if the foundation of his own family remained broken.
