Chapter 12: A Mother’s Journal

That evening, Nicholas did something he hadn't had the courage to do since Clara’s funeral: he opened the wooden chest stored in the master suite’s dressing room.
Inside lay Clara’s personal belongings—her sketchbooks, her favorite knitted cardigans, and a small leather-bound journal.
Nicholas sat by the fireplace, flipping through the delicate pages. The entries were filled with Clara’s sharp wit, her observations on art, and her deep love for their daughter. Near the final pages, written when her illness had begun to weaken her hands, Nicholas found an entry addressed directly to him:
> *""Nicholas, my architect of stone and steel,* > *Do not hide behind your towers when I am gone. Lily will not need a fortress; she will need an open door. Love is messy, fragile, and requires you to be soft in a world that praises hardness. Teach her that courage isn't the absence of tears—it is the choice to keep loving even after the world breaks your heart.""*
Tears blurred Nicholas's vision as he pressed his fingers against Clara’s handwriting. For two years, he had tried to build an impenetrable armor around his life, believing that control would prevent pain. In doing so, he had almost lost the only piece of Clara that remained.

He closed the journal, holding it to his chest, and made a silent vow to never close the door again.
