Chapter 15: Sanctuary

The anniversary of the gala arrived not with a lavish, exclusive party, but with an open-house gathering in the estate's gardens and conservatory.

Children from the downtown clinic ran across the manicured lawns, their laughter echoing off the limestone facade. Tables laden with simple food, fresh fruit, and homemade lemonade were scattered across the terrace. Maria moved among the guests with a wide, genuine smile, while local musicians played acoustic melodies near the fountain.

Nicholas stood at the edge of the terrace, watching Lily show a group of children how to plant sunflower seeds in small biodegradable pots. Evelyn walked up beside him, handing him a glass of sparkling water.

""Quite a difference from last year,"" Evelyn remarked softly.

Nicholas looked around at the bustling life filling every corner of his home. ""Last year, this place was a fortress built to keep the world out. I thought if I built high enough walls, nothing could hurt us.""

""And now?"" Evelyn asked.

Nicholas looked over at Lily, who was laughing heartily as she accidentally spilled soil onto her own shoes.

""Now it’s a sanctuary,"" Nicholas smiled gently, his voice grounded in deep, unwavering peace. ""A place where the doors are always open, and no one ever has to be afraid of the dark again.""

The afternoon sun dipped below the tree line, bathing the grand estate in a warm, amber glow. The shadows lengthened, but they held no fear—only the gentle promise that the light would always return tomorrow.
