Chapter 8 - The Morning After the Storm

The rain has stopped, leaving the city skyline washed in a pale, bruised morning light that filters through the floor-to-ceiling glass windows of the penthouse. Sarah sits in the same beige armchair, though little Lily has long since been carried to her crib down the hall. Julian stands by the grand piano, staring down at the titanium vault key resting on the polished wood surface. He hasn't slept; the dark circles beneath his eyes are deep, and the bruise on his temple has turned a ugly shade of purple and yellow.

"He planted it," Sarah says quietly, breaking the heavy silence that has lingered since dawn. She clutches a mug of black coffee between her hands, seeking warmth. "Marcus dropped that key in the elevator himself to set you up for the board meeting."

Julian doesn't answer right away. He lifts the key, turning it over in his large, tattooed hand, tracing the intricate grooves with his thumb.

"Marcus is arrogant, but he's not stupid," Julian says, his voice raspy from exhaustion. "He wouldn't risk leaving physical evidence unless he knew he had already won. The board meeting is in two hours. If I walk in there looking like this, with security logs hacked and vault keys floating around, they will vote to strip me of my guardianship of Lily."

"Then we prove he's lying," Sarah urges, standing up from the armchair and setting her mug down on the glass coffee table. She takes a few steps toward him, her eyes fierce with determination. "We look at the security footage from the elevator last night. Marcus said he found the key down there, but cameras don't lie. If he dropped it himself, the footage will show him pulling it out of his pocket."

Julian looks up, a flicker of dark hope crossing his face before it is quickly replaced by caution.

"The main security server is locked behind a biometric firewall in the basement archive," Julian explains, running a hand through his dark hair. "Marcus had the IT department change the admin credentials last week. I can't access the raw footage without his clearance code."

"Then we find the code," Sarah replies instantly. "Where would Marcus keep a backup password? A man like that relies on systems, not memory."

Julian stares at her for a long moment, surprised by the sudden steel in her voice. The fragile, terrified woman who had gasped in shock the night before has been replaced by someone far more dangerous—an ally willing to fight back.

"His private study," Julian says slowly, a grim smile touching the corner of his mouth. "He keeps a mechanical safe behind the painting of our grandfather. But it requires a six-digit combination based on a date only family members know."

"What date?" Sarah asks, stepping closer.

"The day our father signed over the company to Marcus, cutting me out completely," Julian whispers. "March fourteenth, nineteen-ninety-eight."

"Let's go," Sarah says without hesitation.

They move together down the long, silent hallway toward the private elevator. The penthouse is dead quiet, the morning sun casting long, sharp shadows across the polished floors. Julian punches the override code into the elevator panel, and the heavy doors slide open with a soft hum.

They descend three floors down into the subterranean archive level, where the air is cool and smells faintly of old paper and dust. Julian leads the way down the narrow, dimly lit corridor, his hand resting on his concealed firearm. They stop in front of a heavy mahogany door bearing a brass plaque with Marcus's initials.

Julian tries the handle. It turns easily. Too easily.

He pushes the door open slowly, stepping inside with Sarah right behind him. The office is dark, the blinds drawn tight against the morning light. On the large oak desk in the center of the room sits an open laptop, the screen glowing brightly in the dark.

Displayed on the monitor is a live security feed of the penthouse living room—filmed from a hidden angle inside the wall clock.

And sitting right in the center of the screen, staring directly into the hidden camera with a cold, knowing smile, is Sarah.
