Chapter 5 - The Lullaby from the Past

The delicate, tinny notes of the music box drift down the hallway, slicing through the tense silence of the penthouse like a scalpel. Sarah feels the hair on the back of her neck stand up as she watches the formidable, heavily tattooed man before her momentarily lose his composure. Julian’s hand shakes slightly as he grips his firearm, his eyes locked on the darkened corridor where the music box continues to play its haunting, repetitive melody.
"Julian," Sarah whispers, her voice laced with genuine terror. "Don't go down there alone. Whatever is happening, it's a trap."
Without answering, Julian takes a slow, deliberate step forward, using his body as a shield to block Sarah and the sleeping toddler in the armchair. Every muscle in his tall frame is coiled tight, ready for violence. He reaches the mouth of the hallway, his boots making no sound on the hardwood floor. The music box stops abruptly, cutting off mid-note, leaving behind a silence so absolute that Sarah can hear the ticking of a grandfather clock across the room.
Julian vanishes into the shadows of the corridor. Sarah sits frozen, her arms wrapped tightly around little Lily, who shifts and murmurs a comforting sound in her sleep. The seconds stretch into an eternity. Faint sounds of movement—a muffled scrape of a shoe, a low intake of breath—reach Sarah’s ears from the master bedroom.
Then, a sudden, heavy crash echoes through the apartment, followed by a muffled grunt of pain.
"Julian!" Sarah cries out, forgetting her caution as she stands up from the armchair, adjusting her hold on the toddler.
She takes two steps toward the hallway before a figure steps out from the shadows. It is Julian, his breathing heavy and ragged, a fresh drop of blood trickling down from his temple where a dark bruise is already beginning to form. He is empty-handed, his gun holstered, but his eyes are wide with a mixture of shock and profound disbelief.
"Did you catch them?" Sarah asks, her voice trembling as she hurries toward him, the light beige cardigan swaying around her knees.
Julian shakes his head slowly, staring past Sarah toward the grand piano in the living room.
"There was nobody in the bedroom," Julian says, his voice raspy and detached. "The music box was sitting right in the center of the unmade bed. And wrapped around it was this."
Julian holds out his left hand. Resting on his palm is a heavy, platinum-and-diamond pendant—the exact necklace Clara had been wearing the day she died.
"That's..." Sarah gasps, taking a step back in sheer horror. "That's the necklace the note just said I buried."
Julian looks up slowly, his gaze locking onto hers with a terrifying, fractured intensity.

"It was locked inside my wall safe upstairs," Julian whispers, stepping closer. "A safe that requires my fingerprint, my retinal scan, and a passcode only I knew. Now tell me the truth, Sarah... how did you open it?"
