Chapter 4 - Written in the Dark

The shocking realization strikes Sarah with physical force, leaving her breathless and dizzy in the beige armchair. She stares at the book clutched in Julian’s tattooed hand as if it were venomous. Little Lily murmurs softly in her sleep, her tiny face pressing deeper into the soft white top beneath Sarah’s cardigan, completely insulated from the nightmare unfolding around them. Sarah shakes her head violently, the strands of medium-brown hair escaping her tightly pinned bun and tumbling across her forehead.

"That's impossible," Sarah stammers, her voice cracking. "I haven't written in a journal in years. I don't even own a pen like that. How could my handwriting be in a book that wasn't here two minutes ago?"

Julian steps back inside, letting the heavy glass door slide shut with a dull thud that cuts off the howling city wind. The ambient temperature in the grand living room drops instantly. He walks over to the armchair, holding the new journal out just far enough for Sarah to see the script without taking it. The flowing, elegant letters spell out a single sentence across the otherwise blank page: He knows you buried the necklace beneath the floorboards.

Julian’s dark eyes bore into hers, searching every micro-expression, every flicker of panic, every drop of sweat forming on her brow.

"Well?" Julian asks, his voice dangerously quiet. "What necklace? And why does a book that appeared out of thin air on my terrace seem to know your deepest secrets?"

"I don't know!" Sarah cries out in a desperate whisper, careful not to wake the child. "I don't have any necklace! I've never buried anything in my life! Someone is playing a sick game with both of us, Julian. Look at my bags, look at my past, I am nobody! I'm just a girl trying to pay off her student loans and keep a roof over her head!"

Julian doesn't blink. He steps closer, leaning down until his face is only inches from hers, the faint scent of cedarwood and danger washing over her.

"Nobody comes into my home without leaving a trail, Sarah," Julian says, his voice steady and chillingly calm. "And nobody leaves this penthouse until I find out who gave you the keys to my dead wife's life."

Before Sarah can formulate a defense, a sharp, metallic click echoes from the hallway leading to the private bedrooms. It is the distinct sound of a deadbolt sliding open from the inside.

Julian’s posture changes instantly. He draws his weapon, stepping in front of the armchair to shield Sarah and Lily with his own body.

"Stay behind me," Julian orders in a fierce whisper, his eyes fixed on the dimly lit corridor.

The heavy oak door at the end of the hallway slowly creaks open, revealing a soft, familiar beam of light cutting through the darkness. A faint, music-box tune begins to play from the master bedroom, the exact lullaby Clara used to sing to Lily every single night.

Julian freezes, his weapon lowering a fraction of an inch as the color drains completely from his face.

"That's impossible," Julian whispers, his voice trembling for the first time. "Clara smashed that music box the day before the accident."
