Chapter 11 - The Empty Crib

The words hit the room like a physical shockwave. Julian freezes, the dangerous tension in his body instantly snapping into raw, unadulterated panic. The color drains completely from his face, leaving the pale scar on his forehead glowing white against his skin. Without uttering a single word, Julian brushes past Marcus and the two security guards with terrifying, explosive speed, shoving them aside as he bolts out of the subterranean archive and races toward the private elevator.
"Lily!" Julian roars, his voice echoing down the concrete corridor with a primal desperation that sends a chill down Sarah’s spine.
Sarah doesn't hesitate a second longer. She turns and sprints after him, her light beige cardigan flying out behind her as she pushes her legs to the absolute limit. Marcus stands frozen in the doorway of his office for a fraction of a second, his corporate composure fracturing for the very first time as genuine shock registers on his face.
"That wasn't part of the plan," Marcus mutters under his breath, stepping out into the hallway.
They pile into the elevator car, Julian hammering the penthouse floor button with his fist over and over again as the steel doors slide shut with agonizing slowness. The ride upward feels like an eternity. Sarah stands pressed against the corner of the car, her chest heaving, her mind racing through a nightmare that grows more surreal by the minute. If Marcus didn't take the child, and Julian certainly didn't, then who in God's name is inside the penthouse?
The elevator chimes, and the doors fly open before they even come to a complete stop. Julian charges out into the luxurious living room, his boots pounding against the polished hardwood floor.
"Lily!" he shouts, sprinting down the private hallway toward the nursery.
Sarah follows right behind him, bursting through the open white door of the toddler's room. The morning sun pours through the sheer pink curtains, illuminating the pastel-colored walls, the mobile hanging quietly from the ceiling, and the white wooden crib.
It is completely empty.
The pink-patterned baby blanket is thrown back, still warm to the touch, but the child is gone. Sitting squarely in the center of the mattress is another leather-bound journal, identical to the ones found the night before.
Julian drops to his knees beside the crib, his large, tattooed hands gripping the wooden rails so hard his knuckles turn stark white. His shoulders shake with a suppressed, agonizing grief that threatens to tear him apart from the inside out.
"She's gone," Julian whispers, his voice breaking completely. "Just like Clara. They took my little girl."
Sarah walks slowly into the nursery, her heart aching for the shattered man kneeling before her. She steps up to the crib and reaches out with a trembling hand, picking up the leather journal resting on the mattress. She opens it slowly. Inside, written in neat, elegant cursive that matches Clara’s exact handwriting, is a single set of coordinates and a message: If you ever want to see your daughter again, come to the coastal highway cliff alone.
Before Sarah can read the coordinates aloud, the heavy footsteps of Marcus and the housekeeper echo down the hallway. Marcus steps into the nursery, his face pale and serious, all traces of his previous arrogance completely gone.
"I checked the perimeter security logs," Marcus says, his voice unusually harsh. "Someone disabled the service elevator five minutes ago. And they didn't go down... they went up to the roof helipad."
Julian stands up slowly, his eyes burning with a dark, lethal fire that terrifies even his brother. He reaches inside his black blazer, pulls out his firearm, and checks the chamber with a sharp, metallic click.

"Get the car ready, Marcus," Julian says quietly, his voice like grinding ice. "Because if they hurt a single hair on my daughter's head, I'm burning this entire dynasty to the ground."
