Chapter 12 - The Road to the Cliff

The black luxury SUV tears through the wet city streets, throwing up sheets of spray as Julian navigates the sharp turns with reckless, hyper-focused intensity. In the passenger seat, Sarah grips the leather dashboard with one hand while clutching the coordinates from the journal in the other. The rain has started up again, lashing against the windshield in heavy, blurred streaks that make the coastal highway nearly impossible to see. In the back seat, Marcus sits in absolute silence, staring out the window with a look of grim, uneasy realization, stripped of his corporate armor.

"The coordinates point to the old lighthouse overlook," Sarah calls out over the roar of the engine and the howling wind. "Ten miles past the county line. The drop-off where... where Clara's car went off the road two years ago."

Julian’s jaw tightens so hard a muscle twitches in his cheek. The pale scar on his forehead throbs with every harsh breath he takes.

"I know the spot," Julian growls, pressing the accelerator down further as the SUV's engine roars in protest. "It's where the police report said Clara lost control of her brakes. But the vehicle inspection later proved the brake lines had been deliberately severed with a hydraulic cutter."

Marcus shifts uneasily in the back seat, his voice cutting through the tense atmosphere of the cabin.

"I didn't cut those lines, Julian," Marcus says quietly, staring straight ahead at the back of his brother's head. "I fought you on the board, I tried to push you out, but I never wanted Clara dead. You have to believe me."

"Save it, Marcus," Julian snaps without taking his eyes off the treacherous road ahead. "You built the machine that ground her down. You created the environment where someone like this could slip in through the cracks."

Sarah looks back and forth between the two brothers, realizing the deep, festering rot at the heart of their family empire. But there is no time for family therapy now. Every mile they cover brings them closer to the edge—literally and figuratively.

The SUV swerves sharply as they take the final turn off the main highway, transitioning onto the narrow, unpaved access road that winds up the steep cliffs overlooking the churning, dark ocean below. The wind buffets the heavy vehicle from the side, threatening to push them off the eroding cliffside edge. Through the gray sheets of rain, the skeletal silhouette of the abandoned lighthouse looms into view, its broken windows rattling violently in the gale.

Parked right beside the cliff edge, hazard lights blinking an eerie orange rhythm, is a sleek black sedan with its doors wide open.

Julian slams on the brakes, throwing the SUV into a violent skid that stops only inches away from the rear bumper of the sedan. Before the vehicle has even fully settled, Julian flings his door open and leaps out into the driving rain, his hand gripping his concealed firearm.

"Stay in the car!" Julian barks back at Sarah and Marcus.

Sarah doesn't listen. The moment Julian steps away, she pushes her door open against the fierce wind and scrambles out onto the wet gravel, pulling her light beige cardigan tightly around her shoulders. The freezing rain instantly drenches her hair and clothes, but she ignores the chill, her eyes locked on the horrifying scene unfolding near the cliff's edge.

Standing beside the open door of the sedan, exposed to the howling wind, is a figure wrapped in a dark trench coat. In their arms, wrapped tightly in a pink-patterned blanket, is little Lily.

Julian freezes ten paces away, his weapon pointed at the ground, his chest heaving.

"Let her go," Julian commands, his voice carrying over the roar of the ocean below. "Step away from the edge."

The figure in the trench coat slowly turns around, lowering the hood to reveal a face that makes Sarah stop dead in her tracks, gasping in utter disbelief.
