Chapter 6 - The Vault of Secrets

The air in the luxurious penthouse feels thin, almost impossible to inhale. Sarah stumbles backward until the back of her knees hits the edge of the beige armchair, forcing her to sit back down before her trembling legs give out entirely. Little Lily stirs again, pressing her face deeper into Sarah’s white top, completely oblivious to the gathering storm. Julian stands over her, the diamond-and-platinum pendant glittering coldly in his palm under the amber lights. The dark bruise on his temple throbs with every beat of his pulse.

"I didn't open your safe, Julian," Sarah pleads, her voice cracking with desperation. "I swear to you on my life, I've never even been upstairs until tonight when you showed me my room. I don't even know where the master bedroom is!"

Julian lowers his hand slowly, clenching the necklace tightly within his fist until the sharp edges of the diamonds bite into his palm. He stares at Sarah, trying to reconcile the terrified, fragile woman before him with the impossible, terrifying logistics of the crime.

"That safe has a mechanical backup," Julian says, his voice dangerously low. "A physical key made of titanium, designed by my grandfather fifty years ago. There are only two copies in existence. One was buried with Clara. The other is locked inside a safety deposit box at the downtown bank, which I visited yesterday."

"Then check the bank!" Sarah urges, tears spilling over her lashes. "Call the manager, look at the security tapes! You'll see I wasn't anywhere near it!"

Julian doesn't answer immediately. He turns his back to her, walking slowly toward the grand piano, staring out at the dark, rain-slicked city skyline. The storm outside is starting to pick up, fat raindrops pelting the massive glass windows with a rhythmic, unsettling fury.

"I called the bank an hour ago, before you even came down to the living room," Julian says quietly, his reflection visible in the dark glass. "The safety deposit box was empty. The key was missing from its velvet lining. And the manager swears I checked it out myself this morning at nine o'clock."

Sarah’s breath catches. "But you were here at nine o'clock. You were interviewing me in the study."

"I know," Julian replies, turning around to face her, his expression grim. "Which means either I am suffering from severe, dissociative amnesia, or someone has gone to extraordinary, impossible lengths to frame both of us for something much darker than a simple break-in."

Sarah looks down at the sleeping toddler in her arms, feeling a profound wave of pity for the grieving father standing before her. Beneath his hardened exterior, Julian is a man unraveling at the seams, haunted by a past that refuses to stay buried.

"We need to call the police," Sarah says firmly, despite her fear. "This has gone way beyond a domestic prank or a misunderstanding. Someone is playing with our minds."

Julian lets out a dark, cynical laugh, shaking his head.

"The police won't help us, Sarah," Julian says, walking slowly back toward her. "My brother, Marcus, is on the board of commissioners. If the police get involved, they won't look for an intruder—they'll lock me away in a psychiatric ward and take Lily away from me forever. That is what Marcus has been trying to do since Clara's funeral."

Before Sarah can process the magnitude of Marcus's threat, the private elevator at the end of the foyer chimes softly. The heavy steel doors begin to slide open, revealing a sharp, amber light spilling into the dark hallway.

Julian’s hand drops instinctively to his firearm.

"Get behind the piano," Julian orders in a fierce whisper, his eyes fixed on the opening elevator doors. "Now."
