Chapter 2 - Ink That Refuses to Fade

The words hang in the air, sharp and suffocating, freezing Sarah in the center of the beige armchair. Little Lily stirs against her chest, letting out a soft, whimpering sigh before settling back into her deep, exhausted slumber. Sarah feels the blood drain entirely from her face, her fingers gripping the edge of the blanket a little tighter. Julian doesn't look angry; his expression is far worse—it is a mask of calculating, desperate grief mixed with a terrifying suspicion. He holds up a small, leather-bound journal, the edges worn and frayed at the corners, exactly like the one that sat on Clara’s desk the night she vanished from this very penthouse.
"Explain this," Julian demands, taking two slow, measured steps back toward the armchair. He doesn't raise his voice, but the sheer volume of his presence fills the spacious room. "Clara died two years ago in a crash on the coastal highway. The police searched every inch of this place. That journal was supposed to be in the wreckage. Yet here it is, tucked neatly inside your travel bag by the kitchen."
"I found it," Sarah says, her voice barely rising above a whisper as she desperately tries to keep her composure for the sake of the sleeping child. "It was in the thrift store downtown where I worked before you hired me last week. I bought it because the paper quality reminded me of my own sketches. I swear to you, Julian, I didn't know whose it was until I opened it this morning."
Julian stops inches away from her, towering over the armchair. He lets out a cold, cynical breath that smells faintly of black coffee and expensive scotch.
"People don't just stumble upon rare leather journals belonging to dead heiresses in discount bins," Julian says, his eyes narrowing as he studies the subtle micro-expressions crossing Sarah’s face. "Especially not journals containing security codes to this building and financial records from my private accounts. Who sent you here, Sarah? Is it my brother trying to dig up dirt for the upcoming board meeting, or are you just a very expensive private investigator with a knack for playing the helpless nanny?"
"I am a nanny, nothing more!" Sarah gasps softly, a tear finally breaking free and tracking down her cheek. "Check my background, check my references, check my bank accounts! I needed this job because I was evicted last month. I don't know anything about security codes or your brother!"
Julian stares down at her, searching her eyes for any sign of a lie. The silence stretches out between them, thick and unbearable, until Julian slowly opens the journal to the very last page.

"That's funny," Julian whispers, turning the book so the dim light hits the page. "The last entry was written three hours ago, using the exact purple ink pen sitting right now on your bedside table."
