Chapter 7 - The Uninvited Guest

The soft chime of the elevator bell echoes through the cavernous penthouse, freezing Julian and Sarah in their tracks. The heavy steel doors glide open smoothly, revealing a tall, impeccably dressed man in a charcoal-grey suit stepping out into the foyer. Marcus. His sharp jawline, dark hair, and cold, calculating eyes bear an unmistakable resemblance to Julian’s, but there are no scars on Marcus’s face, and his posture radiates polished, corporate arrogance rather than raw, kinetic danger. He pauses, adjusting his expensive silk tie, and takes a slow breath of the indoor air as if he owns the place—which, legally speaking, he practically does.

"Working late, little brother?" Marcus calls out smoothly, his voice carrying effortlessly across the spacious living room. He takes two steps forward before freezing, his eyes landing on Julian standing defensively near the grand piano, and then shifting toward Sarah sitting in the beige armchair with the sleeping toddler. A slow, knowing smile creeps across Marcus’s lips. "Ah. I see the new nanny is working overtime. Or perhaps you're just enjoying the late-night company, Julian. Very domestic."

Julian doesn't relax a single muscle. His hand remains steady on his concealed weapon, his shoulders squared as he steps deliberately between Marcus and the armchair.

"What are you doing here, Marcus?" Julian asks, his voice like grinding ice. "The security codes prohibit unannounced visits after midnight."

Marcus chuckles softly, stepping closer with his hands tucked casually into his trouser pockets. He glances sideways at the rain lashing against the massive glass windows.

"The security codes were updated by the board this afternoon, Julian. Didn't you check your emails?" Marcus asks innocently, though his eyes gleam with malice. "As a co-owner of this trust, I have full access 24/7. Besides, I received an anonymous tip that things were getting a bit... unstable up here. Thought I'd check in on my niece. Is little Lily sleeping?"

"She's fine. Get out," Julian says, his tone dropping an octave into a lethal warning.

Marcus ignores the threat entirely. His gaze drifts past Julian’s shoulder, landing directly on Sarah. He tilts his head slightly, studying her with a look of intense, unsettling familiarity that makes Sarah’s stomach turn.

"You must be Sarah," Marcus says, his voice dripping with condescension. "I must admit, your resume was quite impressive. Though I'm surprised a woman with your... specific financial background managed to land a job in this household. Did Julian check your references himself, or did he just hire the first pretty face that walked through the door?"

"Leave her out of this, Marcus," Julian warns, taking a sharp step forward, closing the distance between them. "This is between you and me."

"Is it?" Marcus asks, his smile fading into a hard, humorless line. He reaches inside his charcoal-grey suit jacket and pulls out a small, heavy object, tossing it casually through the air toward Julian.

Julian catches it out of reflex with his tattooed hand. He looks down at his palm. It is the titanium backup key to the master safe.

"I found this lying on the floor of the private elevator downstairs," Marcus says smoothly, watching Julian’s reaction like a hawk. "Funny place for a vault key, isn't it? Almost makes it look like someone inside this penthouse is trying to rob you blind. Or worse... trying to finish what was started two years ago."

Sarah’s breath catches in her throat as she watches Julian’s face pale with cold fury.

Before Julian can lunge forward, Marcus turns on his heel toward the elevator, calling back over his shoulder.

"Sleep tight, Julian. The board meeting is at nine tomorrow morning. I'd suggest having your affairs in order."
