Chapter 1 - The Weight of Seven Hours

The heavy silence of the sprawling penthouse living room presses down like an invisible physical weight. Sarah sits rigidly in the plush beige armchair, the light beige cardigan draped over her shoulders catching the dim amber glow of the recessed ceiling lights. Tucked securely against her chest is little Lily, sleeping soundly in her soft pink pajamas, her tiny chest rising and falling in a rhythmic cadence. The warmth of the toddler radiates through the fabric, grounding Sarah in a reality she barely understands. Across from her stands Julian, a tall, imposing man in his early forties. His dark hair frames a face hardened by time, and a faint, pale scar traces across his forehead down to his neck, contrasting sharply with the tailored black blazer he wears over a crisp black shirt.

Julian’s large, calloused hand—adorned with a detailed rose tattoo wrapping around his knuckles—clutches Sarah’s trembling hand. On Sarah’s finger, a simple silver band catches the light.

"I'm sorry," Sarah whispers, her voice trembling slightly as she stares down at their joined hands with wide, terrified eyes.

Julian leans in close, his dark eyes locking onto hers with an intense, unwavering focus. The lines around his mouth tighten.

"My daughter slept seven hours," Julian says softly, his deep voice vibrating through the quiet room. "She hasn't done that since her mother died."

Sarah feels a lump form in her throat. She swallows hard, trying to steady her breathing.

"I understand," Sarah replies, her tone hesitant and fragile. "If you want me to leave..."

Julian straightens up immediately, pulling his hand away from hers with a sharp, deliberate motion. He stands tall, his broad shoulders squaring off as he steps away from the beige armchair, moving toward the grand piano that commands the corner of the minimalist, luxurious room.

"I'm not firing you," Julian says firmly, his voice echoing slightly against the high glass windows that overlook the glittering skyline of the city.

Sarah looks up at him, her chest tightening with a sudden surge of defensive pride and lingering fear.

"I'm not..." Sarah begins, her voice trailing off as Julian suddenly turns around, his jaw clenched tight.

"You're not leaving tonight," Julian interrupts, his tone absolute. "Because I just found the notebook you dropped in the hallway, the one with my dead wife's exact handwriting."
