Chapter 10 - The Trap Closes

The subterranean office feels like a concrete tomb. The harsh overhead fluorescent lights hum softly, casting an institutional glare over Marcus’s polished mahogany desk. The two armed security guards standing in the doorway don’t draw their weapons, but their heavy, unyielding stances block any path of escape. Julian’s hand remains frozen near his hip where his firearm is concealed, his muscles locked in a desperate calculation of distance, angles, and survival.

"You're insane, Marcus," Julian says, his voice a low, gravelly rumble that vibrates with barely contained fury. "Dragging an innocent woman into our family corporate war? That crosses a line even you never dared to cross before."

Marcus lets out a light, dismissive laugh, shaking his head as if he were dealing with a petulant child. He steps closer to the desk, casually closing the laptop lid with a soft snap that cuts off the glowing surveillance feed of Sarah’s digital duplicate.

"Innocent?" Marcus repeats, his smile fading into a look of cold, calculating disdain. "Julian, my dear brother, nobody who walks into this penthouse with forged credentials and a hidden agenda is innocent. Did you really think she fell out of the sky by pure coincidence? I planted her resume in the agency stack three weeks ago to test your psychological stability. And look at you—you fell for it hook, line, and sinker. You let a stranger sleep down the hall from your daughter just because she looked a little like Clara in the dim lighting."

Sarah feels the blood rush to her ears. The accusation is a physical blow, stripping away every ounce of dignity she had managed to hold onto since stepping foot in the luxury penthouse.

"That's a lie!" Sarah snaps, her voice ringing out sharply in the enclosed space. She steps up beside Julian, her chin held high despite the overwhelming terror gripping her chest. "I needed a job! I didn't know who Julian was until I signed the contract! You manipulated all of this—the journals, the security footage, the key—to make Julian look unstable so the board would strip him of his custody rights!"

Marcus turns his sharp, intelligent eyes toward Sarah, studying her with a chilling mixture of amusement and respect.

"A very spirited performance, Sarah. Almost convincing enough to win an Academy Award," Marcus says smoothly, clapping his hands twice in mock applause. "Too bad the digital forensics team the board hired yesterday already traced the offshore bank transfers directly to your personal checking account. Fifty thousand dollars, wired straight from an anonymous Swiss shell corporation. Shall we check your phone right now to see the incoming deposit?"

Sarah’s breath hitches. Her mind races frantically. "I don't have a Swiss account! I've never seen fifty thousand dollars in my life! My balance is twenty-two dollars and forty cents!"

"Enough, Marcus," Julian interrupts, his voice cutting through the banter like a blade. He takes a slow, deliberate step forward, ignoring the security guards entirely. "If you want the trust, take it. Resign my position on the board, transfer the shares, do whatever you need to do. But leave Sarah and Lily out of this."

Marcus shakes his head slowly, a dark shadow crossing his features.

"It's too late for compromises, Julian," Marcus says quietly. "The police are already on their way up the private elevator. They have a warrant for corporate espionage and kidnapping. And as for Lily... child protective services has already been notified that her father is experiencing a severe psychotic break, armed, and unfit to care for her."

Before Julian can lunge forward, the heavy oak door behind the security guards suddenly swings open wider, revealing a frantic figure rushing down the hallway. It is the senior housekeeper, clutching a small white monitor against her chest, her face pale with panic.

"Mr. Julian! Mr. Marcus!" she gasps, struggling to catch her breath. "Thank God I found you! Little Lily... she's gone from her crib!"
