Chapter 9: Breaking the Walls

Arthur began leaving the office at 4:00 PM every day. His board of directors balked, but Arthur didn't care. He was learning how to be a father. He attended Lily’s school plays, learned how to braid her hair, and cooked dinner—burning it half the time, much to Clara’s amusement.
One evening, after Lily had gone to sleep, Arthur poured two glasses of wine and handed one to Clara on the patio. ""Why do you care so much, Clara? About the dogs, about Lily?""
Clara looked down. ""I grew up in the foster system. I know what it feels like to be tossed aside because you're an inconvenience. Animals don't judge. They just want to be loved. Lily is the same.""
Arthur looked at her, truly seeing her for the first time. ""So am I,"" he whispered.
