Chapter 1: The Echoes of the Drain

The heavy oak front door slammed shut, severing Elena’s frantic screams from the quiet sanctuary of the house. Arthur stood in the foyer, his chest heaving under his tailored three-piece suit. He looked down at his ten-year-old daughter, Lily. She was still kneeling on the hardwood floor, her small hands clutching the metal dog bowl that bore the name MAYIA.
""She's gone, Lily,"" Arthur said, his voice trembling with a mix of residual rage and profound heartbreak. He dropped to his knees, heedless of his expensive trousers, and pulled his daughter into his chest.
Elena had almost become his wife today. But catching her screaming at Lily, realizing she had secretly arranged to have Lily’s golden retriever, Mayia, taken to the pound just hours before the wedding to ""keep the new house clean,"" had shattered the illusion. The million-dollar engagement ring Elena had desperately tried to save was now lost down the kitchen sink drain. It was exactly where it belonged.
