Chapter 2: The Search

Arthur didn't bother changing out of his wedding suit. He threw his overcoat on, wrapped Lily in a warm blanket, and buckled her into the passenger seat of his SUV. ""We are finding her,"" he promised, his jaw set in stone.
According to the cruel, panicked confession he had forced out of Elena before kicking her out, the dog had been handed off to a local, underfunded county shelter. As they drove through the pouring rain, Arthur felt a crushing wave of guilt. How had he been so blind? He had been so consumed with his corporate mergers that he had hired a beautiful, polished woman to play the role of a mother, completely ignoring the monster lurking beneath her designer clothes.
They pulled up to the dreary, concrete building of the county animal control. Lily’s grip on his hand tightened. ""I'm here, sweetheart,"" Arthur whispered. ""I'm right here.""
