Chapter 3: The Girl in the Green Apron

Inside, the shelter smelled of bleach and wet fur. Behind the counter stood a young woman with messy auburn hair tied in a bun, wearing a faded green apron over a t-shirt. Her name tag read Clara.
""We're looking for a golden retriever. Brought in this morning,"" Arthur said, his voice carrying the commanding tone of a CEO.
Clara didn't flinch at his tone. She looked at Lily’s tear-stained face and her expression softened immediately. ""A golden? Older girl, graying around the muzzle, wearing a red collar?""
Lily gasped, nodding frantically.
""She was dropped off by a private courier. Said the owners didn't want her anymore,"" Clara said softly, her eyes flashing with quiet anger at the thought of it. ""Come with me.""
When Clara opened the kennel door, Mayia let out a joyful whimper and practically tackled Lily to the floor. Arthur watched his daughter bury her face in the dog's fur, and for the first time that day, a single tear escaped his eye.
