Chapter 6: The Unspoken Scars
Arthur compromised. He made a massive anonymous donation to the shelter, allowing them to hire three new staff members. In exchange, Clara agreed to come over for a few hours every evening to help Lily rehabilitate Mayia, who was suffering from separation anxiety.
Over the next few weeks, Clara’s presence brought warmth into the sterile house. She didn't wear designer clothes or care about Arthur's wealth. She sat on the floor, getting covered in dog hair, teaching Lily how to bake dog treats.
Slowly, under Clara’s gentle coaxing, Lily began to speak. She confessed to Arthur that Elena had been pinching her, locking her in her room, and threatening to give Mayia away for months. Arthur was horrified. The guilt of his absence struck him like a physical blow.
