Chapter 5: A Different Kind of Wealth

The next morning, Arthur realized Lily was deeply traumatized. She refused to eat and wouldn't let Mayia out of her sight. Recognizing he needed help, and remembering the instant calming effect the shelter worker had on his daughter, Arthur drove back to the county pound.
He found Clara hosing down a kennel. ""I need your help,"" he said frankly. ""My daughter is traumatized. You have a way with animals and, it seems, with kids. I want to hire you as a companion for Lily. Name your price.""
Clara turned off the hose, looking at him skeptically. ""Mr. Vance, I appreciate the offer, but I have a job. These animals need me. I can't be bought to play nanny because you're having a family crisis.""
It was the first time someone had said no to Arthur in a decade. He felt a strange spark of respect. ""Then let me help the shelter,"" he countered.
