Chapter 9 - The Rescue Mission

The shattering of the portable radio echoed off the walls of the dark office, leaving Officer Miller in total, suffocating isolation. The heavy-duty security guard swung the iron crowbar again in a vicious, sweeping arc aimed directly at her chest. Miller ducked instinctively, the cold metal whistling mere inches above her hair before crashing violently into the wooden bookshelf behind her, sending a cascade of heavy law books and binders crashing to the floor.
Vance watched the chaos unfold with cold detachment, snapping the heavy metal door of the wall safe shut and twisting the combination dial. "Finish her quickly and dump her in the basement utility tunnel," Vance ordered the guard. "The district board meeting starts in twenty minutes, and I need to be there to control the narrative."
Officer Miller planted her boots firmly against the tile floor, ignoring the adrenaline spiking through her veins. She knew she couldn't overpower the much larger man in brute strength, so she relied on tactical agility. As the guard lunged for a third time, thrusting the crowbar forward like a spear, she sidestepped sharply, grabbed his forearm, and used his own massive momentum to redirect him.
The guard tripped over the scattered books, slamming face-first into the edge of the principal's heavy oak desk with a sickening thud. He groaned, dropping the iron bar as he crumpled to the floor, completely unconscious.
Vance’s eyes widened in genuine panic for the first time. He turned and bolted toward a hidden side exit behind the shelving unit, desperately trying to slip away with the encrypted flash drive clutched tightly in his fist.
"Stop right there!" Miller shouted, vaulting over the desk in pursuit.
She caught the edge of Vance’s expensive gray suit jacket just as he pulled the emergency push-bar on the side door. The metal door popped open, flooding the dark office with the bright, natural light of the school’s inner courtyard. But before Miller could tackle him to the concrete, a second figure stepped out from the shadows of the courtyard walkway, blocking her path with chilling precision.
It wasn't another hired thug. It was Leo’s older sister, Maya, the veteran police dispatcher who had received the initial video file and realized her brother was still trapped inside the compromised building.
Maya stood with her arms crossed, breathing heavily, holding a heavy master override tablet she had requisitioned from the district's main IT terminal down the block.
"You missed a spot, Officer," Maya said, her eyes fixed past Miller on the fleeing superintendent.
Vance sprinted across the open courtyard toward a waiting black sedan idling by the athletic fields, desperately slamming his hand against his coat pocket to ensure the flash drive was still secure.
Miller and Maya didn't hesitate. They sprinted out into the courtyard together, cutting off Vance’s escape route before he could reach the passenger door.

Vance spun around, realizing he was completely cornered by two determined women who refused to look the other way. He reached inside his jacket, his hand closing around a cold, metallic object that glinted darkly in the morning sun.
