Chapter 3 - Sirens in the Distance

The sharp ringtone cut through the quiet classroom like a jagged knife. Mrs. Gable whipped her head around, her eyes darting across the rows of desks until they locked onto Leo. Her face flushed a deep, angry crimson, matching the fury that had just moments ago been directed entirely at Lily.

"Who authorized the use of electronics during instructional time?" Mrs. Gable demanded, marching down the aisle between the desks with stiff, mechanical strides. The white shirt beneath her dark blue blazer looked stark and severe under the harsh fluorescent lights. "Hand it over, young man. Right now."

Leo stood up slowly, keeping his body positioned between the teacher and his desk. He knew he had to stall just long enough for his sister to open the file. "I was just checking the bus schedule, Mrs. Gable. My mom is running late today."

"I don't care about your bus schedule! Give me that phone!" she yelled, lunging forward with her hand outstretched to snatch the device away.

Before her fingers could brush the plastic case, a faint, rising sound began to echo from outside the classroom window. It started as a low rumble on the distant asphalt, quickly growing into the unmistakable, wailing shriek of emergency vehicle sirens. The sound was piercing, urgent, and headed directly toward the school building.

Mrs. Gable paused, her hand hovering in mid-air. Confusion flickered across her features, replacing her immediate rage. Lily wiped her tear-stained face with the sleeve of her gray t-shirt, looking toward the window with wide, hopeful eyes.

The sirens grew deafeningly loud, the flashing red and blue lights painting the classroom walls in frantic, rhythmic strokes as multiple cruisers pulled aggressively into the school’s main drop-off loop, tires screeching against the pavement.

Leo offered a tight, subtle smile, stepping back and slipping the phone securely into his pocket. "It sounds like your bus schedule just arrived too, Mrs. Gable."

Heavy, purposeful footsteps slammed against the concrete floor of the hallway outside, moving with military precision toward their exact room.

Before Mrs. Gable could process the overwhelming noise, the classroom door was violently kicked open, slamming back against the drywall with a resounding crash that shook the entire frame.
