Chapter 5 - The Cuffs Go On

"Hand me the cuffs," Officer Miller commanded, her eyes never leaving Mrs. Gable’s rapidly draining face.

Her partner stepped forward instantly, sliding the heavy steel bracelets into her outstretched palm with practiced efficiency. The metallic clink of the handcuffs echoed sharply in the silent classroom, sending a shiver through the remaining students who sat frozen at their desks. Leo watched from the foreground, his hands resting quietly in his lap, feeling a profound sense of justice finally taking root in a room that had known too much fear.

Mrs. Gable took a frantic step backward, her dark blue blazer rustling loudly as her back hit the chalkboard. "You cannot possibly be serious! I am an educator of twenty years! I have rights! You need a signed administrative warrant to—"

"You lost all your rights the moment you laid hands on a defenseless child," Officer Miller said coldly, rising to her full height. She stepped into the teacher's personal space, towering over her by a few crucial inches. "You are under arrest for child abuse, endangerment, and willful infliction of emotional distress."

Before the disgraced teacher could mount another desperate defense, Officer Miller grabbed her arm with a firm, unyielding grip, spinning her around and forcing her hands behind her back. The heavy steel cuffs snapped shut around Mrs. Gable’s wrists with a harsh, definitive click. The arrogant authority she had wielded so ruthlessly over her students for decades vanished in a single, humiliating moment.

Lily watched the scene unfold from beside the metal trash can, her small hands wiping away the last lingering tears from her cheeks. The physical pain in her scalp still lingered, but the crushing weight on her chest had finally begun to lift. For the first time all year, the oppressive atmosphere of the classroom felt breathable.

Officer Miller guided the handcuffed teacher toward the door, her movements precise and completely devoid of aggression, yet entirely inescapable. As they passed Leo’s desk, the officer paused for a fraction of a second, casting a brief, appreciative nod in the boy's direction for having the courage to record the truth.

"Take her down to the cruiser and book her into holding," Officer Miller instructed the junior officers as they stepped out into the bright hallway.

The heavy wooden door began to swing slowly shut behind them, cutting off the fading sound of Mrs. Gable’s indignant protests echoing down the corridor.

Lily stood alone by the trash can, feeling completely drained yet strangely liberated. She took a deep, steady breath, preparing to finally leave the classroom behind her forever.

Suddenly, the principal’s voice crackled loudly over the school's old intercom system, demanding that all teachers and students lock their doors immediately due to an unexpected visitor entering the administrative offices.
