Chapter 10 - The Confrontation at the Gate

The metallic glint caught the morning light, revealing the dark barrel of a concealed handgun. Superintendent Vance pulled the weapon from his breast pocket, his face twisted in desperate, cornered fury. The veneer of corporate arrogance had completely evaporated, leaving only a man willing to commit violent felonies to protect his empire of greed.

"Back off!" Vance screamed, waving the firearm erratically between Officer Miller and Maya. "I am not going down for this! You have no idea how high up this goes. You're ruining lives over a few pennies!"

Officer Miller didn't flinch. She kept her hands steady, her posture a textbook definition of tactical calm as she unholstered her department-issued sidearm with deliberate, controlled movements. "Drop the weapon, Vance. Right now. You're out of options, and the entire district mainframe has already been locked out by central command."

Vance’s eyes darted frantically toward the idling black sedan parked just twenty feet away. The driver inside revved the engine, clearly debating whether to abandon his boss and save his own skin.

"Drop it!" Maya yelled, stepping slightly to Miller’s left to create a dual line of sight, forcing the superintendent to divide his attention.

The standoff stretched out in agonizing, heart-pounding silence across the empty courtyard. The wind rustled through the tall oak trees surrounding the school athletic fields, carrying the distant, faint sound of approaching sirens as backup units finally responded to Miller’s earlier distress call.

Vance looked at the police gun pointed directly at his chest, then down at the flash drive clutched tightly in his left hand. The realization that his career, his wealth, and his freedom were evaporating in real-time broke whatever psychological control he had left. His finger twitched against the trigger guard.

"Don't do it," Miller warned, her voice cutting through the wind like a razor blade. "It's not worth spending the rest of your life behind bars."

For a split second, Vance seemed to weigh his options. He shifted his weight, his arm trembling under the sudden, crushing weight of reality.

Suddenly, the front gate of the courtyard burst open with a loud crash. A dozen heavily armed tactical officers poured through the entrance, their rifles raised and laser sights painting a grid of red dots directly across Vance’s chest.

"Drop the weapon! Drop it now!" the lead tactical commander bellowed, his voice echoing off the brick walls of the school buildings.

Vance let out a ragged, defeated breath. The heavy handgun slipped from his trembling fingers, clattering loudly against the concrete pavement at his feet. He raised his hands slowly into the air, his knees buckling slightly as the tactical officers swarmed forward, throwing him to the ground and slapping heavy steel cuffs onto his wrists with practiced aggression.

As Vance was hauled to his feet and pushed toward the back of a waiting transport cruiser, Officer Miller let out a long, slow exhale, finally lowering her service weapon.

Maya walked over, placing a supportive hand on Miller’s shoulder. "We got him. And we got the flash drive."

Before Miller could reply, her portable radio—static-free now that the system was rebooted—crackled to life with an urgent dispatch from the downtown precinct headquarters.
