Chapter 6 - The Principal's Secret

The harsh, static-filled squawk of the intercom system made everyone in the classroom jump. The principal’s voice, usually calm and composed, sounded frantic and strained as it bounced off the hard walls.
"Attention all faculty and students," the principal announced, his voice trembling slightly over the speakers. "Lock your classroom doors immediately. We have an unauthorized visitor in the main office demanding immediate access to student records. Stay put."
Lily froze, her hand gripping the edge of a nearby desk. Officer Miller, who had just stepped back into the doorway after handing Mrs. Gable over to the junior officers, instantly halted. Her instincts flared, recognizing the distinct panic in the administrator's broadcast.
"Stay here," Officer Miller ordered her partner, resting her hand firmly on her holster once again. She pivoted on her heel and broke into a fast, purposeful jog down the hallway, her boots pounding against the floor.
Leo exchanged a quick, worried glance with Lily. The dark blue blazer belonging to Mrs. Gable still hung limply over the back of the teacher's empty chair, a stark reminder of the nightmare they had just survived. But the intercom announcement suggested that the rot within the school went far deeper than just one abusive teacher.
As Officer Miller rounded the corner toward the main office, she found the heavy glass doors locked from the inside. Through the tinted panes, she could see a heavy-set man in an expensive gray suit aggressively shaking the principal’s shoulder, shouting right into the older man's face.
Officer Miller slammed her palm against the glass, demanding they open the door. The man in the suit turned his head, revealing a cold, calculating expression that didn't look panicked at all. In fact, he looked entirely in control.
The man pulled a heavy ring of brass keys from his pocket, unlocked the office door himself, and pushed it open with a smug, arrogant grin.
"Officer, I'm glad you're here," the man said smoothly, adjusting his silk tie. "I am District Superintendent Vance. I demand to know on whose authority a teacher was removed from my school without my direct consent."
Officer Miller stepped inside, her eyes narrowing as she looked past the superintendent to see the principal slumped in his leather chair, looking pale, defeated, and utterly terrified.
"Your teacher was arrested for child abuse, Superintendent," Officer Miller replied, her voice dropping into a dangerous register. "And based on the look of this office, you have some explaining to do about what else you've been covering up."
Superintendent Vance chuckled softly, a chilling sound that lacked any warmth. He reached into his briefcase, pulled out a thick manila folder, and dropped it heavily onto the desk.
"You think you've saved the day, Officer," Vance said, his smile widening into something predatory. "But you just stepped into a hornet's nest you can't possibly survive."

He opened the folder to reveal a signed document that made Officer Miller's breath catch in her throat.
